Position Overview
The Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer will own the technical execution of instrumentation and control systems projects from inception to completion. This involves translating intricate client requirements into detailed engineering designs and actionable construction documents. The position requires leadership in developing strategies for municipal water and wastewater facilities, power generation plants, and industrial automation systems. Projects may include microgrid control implementations, combined heat and power (CHP) systems for universities and industrial sites, and large-scale process automation for utilities. The engineer will serve as a key technical resource, interfacing with field teams and site engineers to ensure successful system installation, testing, and commissioning.
This role demands a high level of technical proficiency and the ability to manage multiple project responsibilities. Success requires a thorough understanding of control strategies and the ability to apply them across various industrial and infrastructure contexts. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring all designs meet relevant utility and industrial standards. This position is integral to the delivery of complex projects that form the backbone of modern infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer will perform a wide range of technical and project management duties. Primary responsibilities include the development and review of control system architectures for a variety of applications. The engineer will create detailed design documents, including Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and loop diagrams. A significant portion of the role involves preparing specifications for instruments, controllers, and associated equipment. Evaluation of vendor proposals and bid packages is a critical function to ensure the selection of appropriate technology.
The position requires the creation of logic diagrams and control strategies, often utilizing SAMA (Scientific Apparatus Makers Association) format. The engineer will coordinate closely with procurement and construction teams to provide necessary documentation, such as cable schedules and wiring guides. A major component of the role is providing on-site support during the installation and commissioning phases. This includes validating that installed systems perform according to the design intent. The engineer will also review vendor submittals to confirm compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates must possess a minimum of ten years of direct experience in instrumentation and controls. This experience should be focused on applications within power plants, water treatment facilities, or similar industrial environments. A deep understanding of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) is essential. The engineer must be adept at interpreting complex engineering documents. Proficiency in reading and creating P&IDs, I/O lists, and instrument data sheets is a core competency.
The ability to develop logic diagrams and control strategies for complex automation projects is required. Experience with combined heat and power (CHP) systems is highly valued. The engineer must demonstrate the capability to support bid evaluation processes and contribute to construction activities. Effective collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering groups is necessary to ensure project success. Strong communication skills are required to interface effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with microgrid control systems for utilities, campuses, or industrial applications is a distinct advantage. Familiarity with university or industrial environments implementing CHP systems is considered a plus. Proficiency with engineering tools and software relevant to the role is expected.
Tools and Systems
Proficiency with standard engineering software is required. This includes word processing and spreadsheet applications. Experience with CAD software and project management tools is necessary for the effective execution of duties.
