About the role
Join the Platform team at Spotify to help build Groove, an internal platform used by thousands of Spotify employees to plan, coordinate, and deliver work across the company. You will be working within a small, cross-functional engineering group that focuses on creating tools designed to reduce friction and improve efficiency for teams. The team operates with a fast-paced, iterative approach, continuously refining products based on user feedback to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the organization. As a senior engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the platform's architecture, delivering impactful features, and mentoring other team members to uphold high technical standards.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop, enhance, and maintain Groove, a comprehensive fullstack platform that supports planning, collaboration, and work execution workflows used by thousands of Spotify employees
- Design and implement new features such as initiative tracking, planning workflows, dependency management, and other tools that streamline project coordination
- Build end-to-end solutions leveraging React and TypeScript on the frontend, and Java, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, and Google Kubernetes Engine on the backend
- Collaborate closely with product managers and designers to understand user needs, translate requirements into technical solutions, and deliver intuitive, user-friendly experiences
- Ensure the reliability and stability of the platform through rigorous testing, monitoring, and continuous improvements in production environments
- Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production incidents promptly, and implement fixes to minimize downtime
- Focus on improving system performance, scalability, and maintainability across both frontend and backend components
- Use AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity while maintaining a high standard of code quality and correctness
- Lead the design and delivery of complex features that have a significant impact on the platform's capabilities
- Take ownership of problems from initial ambiguous requirements through to production deployment, ensuring solutions are robust and scalable
- Contribute to the evolution of the platform's architecture, influencing decisions across frontend, backend, and infrastructure layers
- Mentor and support other engineers, sharing best practices, code reviews, and technical guidance to foster team growth
- Work in a collaborative environment that values feedback, continuous learning, and innovation
- Engage with stakeholders across teams to gather requirements, provide technical insights, and ensure alignment on project goals
- Advocate for best practices in software engineering, including code quality, testing, documentation, and security
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to bring innovative ideas into the platform
- Participate in planning sessions, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies to continuously improve team processes
- Contribute to the documentation of platform architecture, APIs, and internal tools to facilitate knowledge sharing
- Support the onboarding of new team members, helping them understand the platform and development workflows
- Maintain a focus on delivering high-quality features that meet business needs while balancing technical debt and long-term maintainability
Requirements
- Over 5 years of experience developing scalable fullstack applications in production environments
- Strong proficiency in both frontend and backend development, with a solid understanding of how they integrate
- Hands-on experience working with APIs, distributed systems, and modern web application architecture
- Demonstrated ownership of projects, including implementation, production health, and ongoing improvements
- Proven ability to influence technical direction and contribute to system design decisions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of documenting complex systems and collaborating effectively within distributed teams
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code that others can confidently build upon
- Responsible use of AI-assisted development tools, applying sound engineering judgment to validate outputs and ensure quality
- Comfort working through ambiguity, making trade-offs between speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically about system design and architecture
- Interest in mentoring teammates, sharing knowledge, and supporting their growth
- Curiosity and motivation for continuous learning, experimentation, and staying current with industry trends
- Experience working in an Agile environment, participating in planning, retrospectives, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ability to balance technical excellence with delivering value quickly
- Knowledge of security best practices and considerations for cloud-based applications
- Familiarity with container orchestration and cloud infrastructure, specifically Google Kubernetes Engine, is advantageous
