About the role
The Starshield team builds secure satellite systems for government use, focusing on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads. You will develop software for in-space mesh networks and manage the full lifecycle of satellite systems from design to on-orbit operation. This role requires deep ownership of flight software components and the algorithms that enable resilient operations in orbit. You will partner with mission architects to translate strategic objectives into robust software architectures and implementation plans. The work involves solving hard problems in distributed systems where latency and reliability are mission-critical. You will be responsible for ensuring software integrity across the entire constellation lifecycle in a high-assurance environment. This position demands rigorous engineering discipline and the ability to operate autonomously on complex technical challenges. You will contribute directly to the advancement of secure space-based infrastructure and national security objectives.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and implement software for controlling satellite constellations in low earth orbit.
- Execute management of the entire software development lifecycle, encompassing prototyping, testing, and deployment.
- Engineer networking solutions that facilitate communication between satellites, ground stations, and users.
- Construct automated ground systems dedicated to command and control operations.
- Produce simulations and tools to support hardware-in-the-loop and vehicle-in-the-loop testing methodologies.
- Partner with interdisciplinary teams focused on sensors, inter-satellite lasers, and space-based computing platforms.
- Optimize software for performance, reliability, and security in the harsh conditions of space.
- Integrate complex software components with flight hardware and ground infrastructure systems.
- Analyze operational data to drive improvements in software behavior and system performance.
- Document technical designs, processes, and procedures to maintain institutional knowledge.
- Apply creative problem-solving to address emergent challenges during development and on-orbit operations.
- Support the definition and refinement of software requirements based on mission needs.

Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor degree in computer science, engineering, math, or a scientific discipline, or possess 2+ years of professional software development experience.
- Demonstrate proficiency in C, C++, or Python, or show full stack development experience across multiple layers of the technology stack.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret or Top Secret SCI clearance as a mandatory condition of employment.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee to comply with ITAR regulations governing space systems.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as required to meet critical project milestones and mission demands.
- Capability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment with frequent priority shifts and urgent operational needs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Commitment to following detailed procedures and adhering to strict engineering standards.
Nice to have
- Experience with Linux kernel development or high-performance C++ programming in resource-constrained environments.

Security and Eligibility
