About the role
In this position, you will play a crucial role in the development and enhancement of the Raptor rocket engines, focusing on their power balance, control mechanisms, and calibration processes. Your primary responsibility will be to create advanced tools that convert test data into actionable performance predictions, which are essential for ensuring flight safety and refining engine designs.

What you'll do
- Enhance and refine lumped-parameter thermofluid physics models specifically tailored for the Raptor engine, ensuring accuracy in performance predictions.
- Conduct comprehensive engine cycle analyses to provide insights that will drive design modifications and improve thrust capabilities.
- Investigate root causes of performance issues by utilizing engine models alongside limited instrumentation to derive meaningful conclusions.
- Update and maintain Raptor representations used in vehicle simulations, ensuring they align with control software validation and Monte Carlo flight analysis requirements.
- Develop software solutions and user-friendly portals that help identify performance variability and its impact on hardware manufacturing processes.
- Automate various workflows aimed at predicting test performance, as well as generating flight data that will be utilized by Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems and flight software.
- Standardize tools and methodologies across teams to enhance interoperability, streamline processes, and minimize technical debt.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that simulation tools are effectively integrated into the overall engineering workflow.
- Participate in design reviews and provide technical insights that contribute to the continuous improvement of propulsion systems.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing and innovation within the team.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in propulsion technology and software engineering practices to ensure that SpaceX remains at the forefront of the industry.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field in STEM is required.
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in software development, demonstrating a strong track record of delivering high-quality software solutions.
- At least 5 years of experience in developing physics-based simulations for dynamic systems, showcasing your ability to model complex behaviors accurately.
- Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in simulation and data analysis, such as Python, C++, or similar.
- Familiarity with software development best practices, including version control, testing, and documentation.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and derive actionable insights.
Nice to have
- Advanced knowledge in dynamical systems and lumped parameter modeling, which can enhance simulation accuracy.
- Experience with physics-informed neural networks and their application to solve engineering problems.
- Skills in data-driven analysis, particularly in the context of complex systems, to improve decision-making processes.
- Capability to identify root causes from limited sensor data, facilitating faster troubleshooting and resolution of issues.
- Understanding of thermodynamics, thermochemistry, mechanics, materials science, and fluid dynamics.
- Experience in managing data pipelines for high-dimensional datasets, ensuring efficient data processing and analysis.
- Background in simulating combustion engines or fluid systems, providing relevant insights into propulsion technologies.
- Full-stack web development experience, including database design and familiarity with frontend frameworks like React or Angular.
- Excellent communication skills, enabling you to effectively present technical information to internal stakeholders and collaborate with diverse teams.
