SMT Specialist - 2nd Shift

About the role

This position invites you to join the dedicated avionics production team focused on the manufacturing of Starlink hardware within the Redmond facility. In this role, you will manage critical equipment operations, train technical staff on complex procedures, and resolve production challenges to maintain high quality and output standards. The specialist is responsible for ensuring that production workflows run smoothly and efficiently while adhering to strict quality protocols. You will act as a technical leader on the second shift, driving improvements and supporting the team in a fast-paced environment. This role requires a proactive mindset to identify issues before they escalate and to implement sustainable solutions. You will work closely with engineering and production leads to align on goals and optimize overall line performance. Your contributions will directly impact the reliability and scalability of SpaceX's production capabilities for satellite hardware.

What you'll do

• Set up and program automated production equipment for PCBA builds with precision and attention to detail.
• Design custom fixtures to improve process flow, reduce cycle time, and enhance overall efficiency on the production line.
• Train and mentor technicians on machine operation, safety protocols, and troubleshooting methods to ensure consistent execution.
• Conduct design of experiments to optimize SMT yield, performance metrics, and long-term reliability of assemblies.
• Triage non-conforming products by performing detailed analysis and implementing preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
• Define maintenance schedules and support equipment requirements to minimize downtime and maximize operational availability.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to provide actionable feedback on design for manufacturability and process improvements.
• Manage production issues end-to-end to ensure design integrity, quality standards, and on-time delivery schedules are met.
• Support assembly and testing processes including reflow, selective soldering, conformal coating, AOI inspection, and flying probe testing.
• Monitor key performance indicators and adjust workflows to meet or exceed production targets on the second shift.
• Perform root cause analysis on defects and lead corrective actions to sustain high levels of product quality.
• Document all procedures, changes, and observations to maintain accurate records for compliance and continuous improvement.
• Assist in the validation of new equipment and processes to ensure they meet technical and safety requirements.
• Promote a culture of safety, cleanliness, and organization within the production environment at all times.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent with 2+ years of experience in SMT or PCBA process engineering, OR a bachelor degree in math, science, or engineering.
• Ability to work 2nd shift hours, including overtime and weekends, with consistent reliability and punctuality.
• Physical ability to lift 25 pounds unassisted and perform tasks involving standing, bending, and climbing as required by the role.
• Must meet ITAR requirements: U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow complex instructions accurately in a technical manufacturing setting.
• Proven capability to work independently and as part of a team in a demanding production environment.
• Willingness to adhere to all company policies, safety standards, and quality management systems without exception.
• Effective communication skills to interact with technical and engineering personnel at various organizational levels.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with pick and place machines, reflow ovens, or through-hole soldering in a production context.
• Background producing hardware to J-STD-001 Class 2 or IPC-A-610 Class 2 standards with a demonstrated track record of compliance.

• SMT process optimization techniques to improve yield, reduce defects, and enhance throughput.
• PCBA manufacturing knowledge across multiple process steps and quality checkpoints.

Practical notes

• Pay ranges: Level 1 ($34.00 - $40.00/hour), Level 2 ($38.00 - $45.00/hour), Level 3 ($42.00 - $51.00/hour).
