About the role
The Raptor Components team creates and maintains the mechanical and electro-mechanical control systems for the Raptor engine. You will manage the full lifecycle of these components, from initial design and modeling to testing and flight readiness for the Starship vehicle. In this capacity, you own the mechanical integrity and functional performance of critical propulsion hardware throughout its entire development and operational timeline. Your work will directly influence the reliability and success of engine systems that power Starship missions. You will act as a mechanical systems expert, driving decisions that affect flight safety and vehicle capability. This role requires a disciplined approach to design, analysis, and verification to meet stringent aerospace standards. You will be responsible for translating system requirements into robust component solutions that survive the harsh environments of launch and spaceflight.

What you'll do
- Create and refine CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical specifications to improve reliability.
- Lead investigations into hardware issues during development, testing, and launch to implement corrective actions.
- Design flow control devices with a focus on manufacturability and 99.99% reliability.
- Oversee component testing and checkout procedures at various launch and build facilities.
- Collaborate with supply chain, manufacturing, and flight operations to optimize factory yield and production volume.
- Influence system architecture by evaluating component capabilities to reduce the cost of payload delivery to orbit.
- Validate designs through analysis, testing, and data review to ensure performance against stringent requirements.
- Support the development of test procedures and protocols for qualification and acceptance testing.
- Interface with cross-functional teams to resolve technical risks and remove integration barriers.
- Document engineering decisions, changes, and test results to maintain accurate technical records.
- Mentor junior engineers and technical staff on best practices for mechanical design and verification.
- Participate in design reviews, failure investigations, and process improvements to elevate team capability.
- Ensure all component solutions comply with regulatory requirements and internal quality standards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance durability, efficiency, and producibility of propulsion hardware.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in physics or an engineering field.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in mechanical system design and analysis, gained through professional work, student projects, or research.
- Must meet ITAR requirements: U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
- Authorization to work in the country of assignment is required.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear technical documentation and collaboration.
- Willingness to adhere to strict engineering processes and quality controls.
- Physical ability to review designs, test hardware, and travel to facilities as needed.
- Compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements is mandatory.
- Commitment to maintaining technical proficiency and staying current with industry advancements.

- Ability to work weekends and extended hours.
Practical notes
- Travel: 10% travel required for launch and testing support.

Salary: Level 1 ($100,000 - $117,500) or Level 2 ($115,000 - $140,000) based on experience and education.
