Operations Engineer

About the role

SpaceX is on a mission to create the Starlink network, which aims to deliver internet access worldwide. This ambitious project necessitates the large-scale production of user terminals, silicon chips, and solar cells. We are looking for an Operations Engineer to design and oversee the factory systems that will enable the production of millions of these units each year, ensuring efficiency and quality throughout the manufacturing process.

What you'll do

• Develop both physical and digital layouts for the factory, ensuring optimal resource allocation and part movement to facilitate high-volume production.
• Manage the planning of floor spaces, assess capacity needs, and analyze product flow to align with delivery schedules.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external contractors to coordinate construction activities effectively.
• Supervise budgets and timelines for capital projects, proactively addressing any deviations that arise.
• Establish and refine business processes related to manufacturing execution, inventory management, nonconformance handling, and material traceability.
• Act as a technical authority for production systems, aiding in troubleshooting and data collection efforts.
• Implement and monitor tracking systems for quality, safety, environmental standards, and production metrics.
• Support leadership in identifying areas for improvement in production output, quality, and cost efficiency.
• Work collaboratively with various departments, including Engineering, Testing, Supply Chain, and Customer Experience, to ensure operational alignment and consistency.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in mechanical, software, industrial engineering, or a related field.
• At least one year of experience in manufacturing or industrial project management, which may include collegiate engineering projects such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Design Build Fly, or relevant internships.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and derive actionable insights.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
• Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems and quality control processes.

Nice to have

• Experience in high-volume production settings, particularly in sectors like automotive or consumer goods.
• Background in project management that encompasses cross-functional business processes.
• Experience overseeing multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects in collaboration with contractors.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems relevant to manufacturing environments.
• Proficiency in design software such as Revit or AutoCAD.
• Familiarity with SQL and database management systems.
• Understanding of Six Sigma methodologies and lean engineering practices.
• Experience with production tooling and automation technologies.
• Ability to analyze large datasets and effectively communicate findings to stakeholders.
• Previous experience supporting the high-volume production of electro-mechanical systems.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit for design and layout planning.
• Knowledgeable in SQL for database management and data analysis.
• Familiar with lean engineering principles and Six Sigma methodologies for process improvement.
• Experienced in project management techniques to oversee manufacturing projects.
• Understanding of Manufacturing Execution Systems to enhance production efficiency.

Practical notes

• Candidates must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees to comply with ITAR regulations.
• This position requires a physical presence at our facility in Bastrop, TX.
• Be prepared for extended hours or weekend work during critical project milestones.
• Travel may be required up to 10 percent of the time.
