The avionics team for the Starship project is dedicated to developing high-reliability electronic systems for both orbital missions and broader space exploration initiatives. As a Mechanical Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to design hardware that is not only efficient in terms of cost but also optimized for mass, aligning with our overarching mission of enabling humanity to become a multi-planetary species.

What you'll do
- Design and develop custom instrumentation that can withstand extreme pressure, temperature variations, and dynamic conditions encountered during space missions.
- Create integrated solutions that combine electro-mechanical systems with fluid assemblies to enhance overall functionality.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing teams on the production floor, engaging in processes such as laser welding, thermal testing, and pressure testing to ensure product integrity.
- Perform structural, thermal, and tolerance analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) as well as manual calculation techniques to validate designs.
- Oversee the entire design lifecycle, from initial 3D modeling and the creation of production drawings to the ongoing maintenance of technical documentation.
- Investigate and analyze component failures that may arise from shock, vibration, loads, and thermal stress to enhance design robustness.
- Work in tandem with production personnel and machine shops to guarantee that designs fulfill all project specifications and requirements.
- Lead internal design review sessions and engage with external suppliers to ensure alignment and quality throughout the design process.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering is essential.
- At least one year of experience in electromechanical or mechanical design and analysis is required, which may include relevant student projects or internships.
- Familiarity with design principles and methodologies related to high-reliability systems is preferred.
- A solid understanding of engineering principles and practices, particularly in the context of aerospace applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex engineering challenges effectively.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in CAD software and experience with finite element analysis (FEA) tools are advantageous.
- Previous experience in high-volume production settings and knowledge of design for manufacturability principles would be beneficial.
- A background in designing components for high-pressure or high-vibration environments is a plus.
- Understanding of structural failure modes and analysis techniques will be helpful.
- Experience conducting thermal and structural FEA studies is desirable.
- Familiarity with thermal and fatigue testing processes for electro-mechanical hardware is a bonus.
- A strong grasp of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles is preferred.
- Experience collaborating with PCB designers or involvement in PCB layout work is a plus.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential for success in this role.

Practical notes
- Compensation for this position varies: Level I offers an annual salary ranging from $100,000 to $115,000, while Level II ranges from $110,000 to $135,000.
