About the role
This position focuses on the design and implementation of specialized machinery for testing Starlink satellite components. You will build test systems that validate flight hardware across electrical, mechanical, RF, optical, and propulsion disciplines to ensure mission success. In this role, you will own the full lifecycle of custom test equipment, from initial concept and mechanical design through fabrication, integration, and final acceptance testing. You will be responsible for translating high-level test requirements into detailed mechanical solutions that are robust, repeatable, and scalable for production environments. The position requires a hands-on engineer who actively builds and iterates on hardware while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. You will troubleshoot test failures, optimize procedures, and document processes to support high-velocity development. Success in this role means ensuring that every test system you deliver enables the team to confidently validate flight hardware against strict performance and reliability standards.

What you'll do
- Develop, build, and implement custom test equipment including mechanical, thermal, and fluid systems.
- Coordinate with electrical, controls, and software engineers to create integrated testing solutions.
- Partner with production and leadership teams to improve factory output, development timelines, and hardware reliability.
- Address complex technical challenges with a focus on efficiency and rapid execution.
- Design and assemble mechanical fixtures, jigs, and support structures for satellite component testing.
- Create detailed mechanical drawings and schematics that communicate design intent clearly to manufacturing and test teams.
- Perform structural and thermal analysis to validate test stand performance under operational and safety limits.
- Support the qualification and acceptance testing of new test hardware before deployment on the factory floor.
- Maintain and improve existing test systems to increase throughput, reduce downtime, and simplify operator procedures.
- Apply knowledge of fluid systems and mechanical interfaces to validate leak paths and flow characteristics for test hardware.
- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure test fixtures meet quality, cost, and delivery targets.
- Implement safety features and guarding on test equipment to protect personnel and hardware during high-risk tests.
- Document test procedures, failure modes, and corrective actions to support continuous improvement and audits.
- Support test campaigns at multiple SpaceX locations as project needs evolve.
- Contribute to the development of test standards and best practices across the Starlink Components Test Team.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Flexibility regarding work schedule based on operational requirements.
- Must meet ITAR requirements as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for employment now or in the future.
- Willingness to adhere to strict security protocols and pass required background checks for access to sensitive facilities.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment by following all company safety policies and procedures.
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change quickly based on mission needs.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in CAD software such as NX, CATIA, or ProE and PLM/PDM systems like Teamcenter.
- Experience designing custom electromechanical hardware including motors, actuators, linear rails, and rigging.
- Background in manufacturing process development, facility layouts, and inspection techniques.
- Experience with production tooling or product design in prototype or high-volume environments.
- Structural analysis skills using FEMAP, NASTRAN, ANSYS, or NX Advanced Simulation.
- Expertise in mechanism design, welded structures, and mass-efficient structures.
- Practical application of ASME Y14.5 drafting standards and GD&T.
- Ability to interpret fluid system schematics and mechanical drawings.

Practical notes

Salary: Level I $100,000 to $115,000 per year; Level II $110,000 to $135,000 per year.
- Total rewards include company stock, stock options, long-term cash awards, discretionary bonuses, and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

- Company shuttles provide transit from select Seattle locations to the Redmond office.
