About the role
Join the Starlink team to build and maintain software for the largest satellite constellation in operation, delivering internet service to millions of users globally. You will own the full software lifecycle from initial development through testing and ongoing support. The work spans custom hardware deployed across consumer devices, gateways, and ground infrastructure. You will design and implement low-level software components that directly influence the performance and reliability of fielded systems. This role requires collaboration across multiple disciplines to ensure that software solutions meet stringent operational requirements. You will be responsible for translating high-level requirements into robust software designs that can withstand the demands of global deployment. Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and build highly available consumer devices and gateway systems that run reliably with minimal upkeep across millions of deployments
- Contribute to architecture discussions, design sessions, and code reviews
- Build prototypes that validate design decisions and clarify technical limits
- Collaborate with factory teams to support in-house device manufacturing
- Write Linux-based software targeting common processors and microcontrollers such as ARM and RISC V
- Create test frameworks that run across virtualized hardware and hardware-in-the-loop simulations
- Develop tooling that improves deployment frequency, test reliability, and data analysis within a continuous integration pipeline
- Write software for custom phased array and modem silicon
- Help scale telemetry infrastructure to handle trillions of data points from millions of devices
- Implement fault-tolerant mechanisms that ensure system stability under adverse conditions
- Optimize software for performance, power consumption, and reliability in resource-constrained environments
- Partner with hardware engineers to refine device specifications and improve manufacturability
- Support the integration of new technologies into existing software frameworks
- Document software architectures, interfaces, and operational procedures for internal and external stakeholders
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or another STEM field plus 1+ years of professional software engineering experience, or 3+ years of professional software engineering experience without a degree
- Proficiency in at least one of C, C++, Golang, Python, or Rust
- Hands-on experience with embedded or low-level systems development
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends when necessary
- U.S. citizenship or eligible work authorization due to ITAR restrictions
- Ability to pass required background checks and security screenings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment
- Commitment to following engineering best practices and coding standards
- Willingness to travel as required for team meetings, factory visits, or customer engagements
- Compliance with company policies and procedures
Nice to have
- Track record of developing, debugging, and deploying software on real-world embedded hardware
- Strong analytical thinking and creative problem-solving ability
- Solid grounding in networking protocols such as TCP/IP, electronics, math, physics, and radio frequency concepts
- Proven skills in debugging, performance tuning, and testing
- Familiarity with security challenges in distributed systems and internet services
