About the role
SpaceX is seeking an electrical engineer to contribute to the design and maintenance of the electrical systems that facilitate Starship launch operations. This role involves working on a variety of systems, including the launch mount, launch tower, propellant farm, and power generation and storage facilities. As part of the Starship Launch Engineering team, you will collaborate closely with professionals from mechanical, controls, and fluid systems disciplines to ensure seamless integration and functionality.

What you'll do
- Take ownership of the electrical design for launch pad systems, focusing on power distribution, motor control, and related infrastructure.
- Develop industrial electrical control panels and power distribution systems in compliance with NEC, NFPA 79, and UL 508A standards.
- Create detailed electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and comprehensive construction documentation.
- Specify appropriate conduit, cable tray, and wiring methods for both permanent and temporary installations at the launch pad.
- Collaborate with utility providers and internal teams to guarantee reliable power delivery to essential equipment.
- Integrate electrical systems with high-power machinery, motion systems, and various instrumentation.
- Provide on-site support during construction, activation, and testing phases to ensure successful implementation.
- Supervise electrical subcontractors, assess their work, and ensure adherence to design specifications and safety protocols.
- Perform load calculations, short circuit studies, and arc flash analyses to ensure system reliability and safety.
- Design electrical systems suitable for hazardous classified areas that are typical in launch environments.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline is required.
- A minimum of one year of experience in designing, building, or commissioning electrical systems is necessary (internships are included).
- Must be able to pass background checks mandated by the Space Force for operations at Cape Canaveral.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as required by project demands.
- Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 30 pounds without assistance.
- Willingness to travel between different launch sites as necessary.
Nice to have
- Experience in sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, industrial automation, manufacturing, oil and gas, data centers, or commercial construction is advantageous.
- Hands-on experience with power distribution systems is preferred.
- Familiarity with motor control centers, variable frequency drives (VFDs), transformers, switchgear, and grounding systems is a plus.
- Experience in designing for hazardous locations (Class I, Division 1 or 2) is beneficial.
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and UL 508A standards is desirable.
- Experience conducting power system studies, including arc flash, coordination, and load flow analyses.
- Ability to design and evaluate electrical schematics and panel layouts is a strong asset.
- Field installation and commissioning experience is highly regarded.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technicians and electricians are essential.
- Experience managing electrical scopes on fast-paced construction or integration projects is a plus.
- Familiarity with critical power systems, including uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), backup generators, and automatic transfer switches is beneficial.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines is crucial.
