The Staff Accountant
GL & Reporting is a pivotal position within the Accounting and Finance department at Sonic Internet + Phone. This role is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of the organization's financial data in compliance with U.S. GAAP. The Staff Accountant ensures the integrity of the general ledger through precise journal entries and supports timely execution of month end, quarter end, and year end close activities. This position serves as a key contributor to both internal and external financial processes, working collaboratively with Finance teams, FP&A, internal and external auditors, and business stakeholders. The role produces critical financial reports, reconciliations, and documentation that underpin transparent and accurate financial records for internal decision-making and external reporting to lenders and investors.

The Staff Accountant
GL & Reporting supports core accounting operations and financial reporting for Sonic Internet + Phone. This role ensures the integrity of the general ledger, executes accurate journal entries, and drives timely month end close activities in compliance with U.S. GAAP. The position serves as a key contributor to internal and external financial processes, working collaboratively with Finance and business stakeholders.
What you'll do
- Process recurring and nonrecurring journal entries with complete documentation and appropriate approvals.
- Lead month end, quarter end, and year end close activities, ensuring transactions are recorded in the correct period and account.
- Maintain detailed subledger activity to support a clean, accurate general ledger.
- Prepare internal financial reports to support operational decision making.
- Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations with detailed supporting schedules.
- Investigate discrepancies, analyze root causes, and resolve issues using source documentation.
- Escalate unusual transactions or significant variances to the Accounting Manager.
- Retain thorough reconciliation documentation in alignment with close standards.
- Partner with FP&A to perform month over month and period over period variance analysis.
- Supply data and analysis to management and Finance teams upon request.
- Prepare schedules, working papers, and documentation for external and internal audits.
- Respond to lender and investor reporting requests, ensuring compliance components are addressed.
- Confirm that all reported balances are supported by clear documentation and conclusions.
- Maintain and update accounting records within ERP systems.
- Identify opportunities to enhance close processes, reconciliations, and reporting workflows.
- Keep organized records for all accounting activities to ensure traceability and control.
- Engage in special projects and system improvements as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance.
- Two or more years of experience in general ledger and month end accounting roles.
- Foundational understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Demonstrated experience preparing journal entries and performing detailed account reconciliations.
- Intermediate Excel proficiency and strong attention to numeric detail.
- Capacity to meet firm close timelines within a structured, deadline driven environment.
- Ability to work in the office a minimum of three days per week at the Santa Rosa, California location.
- Willingness to learn technical accounting concepts and regulations as needed.

Work Environment
The work environment reflects typical office conditions associated with this role. Minor noise levels are expected, and the role requires simultaneous management of multiple priorities. The role may involve lifting or moving items up to 40 pounds.
