Compliance Counsel
Job description
About the role
Solace is a Series C startup focused on simplifying the healthcare experience for patients through expert advocacy and navigation tools. We are looking for a Compliance Counsel to manage regulatory requirements and help us maintain trust while scaling our operations across all 50 states. In this capacity, you will serve as the primary legal resource responsible for ensuring that our products, policies, and business practices adhere to the complex web of healthcare laws governing our industry. You will partner closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to embed compliance into the foundation of our growth, rather than treating it as a retrospective obligation. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment where regulatory challenges intersect with rapid product innovation and evolving market demands. You will be expected to translate dense legal frameworks into clear, actionable guidance that enables the business to move confidently and responsibly.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Interpret healthcare regulations including HIPAA, Medicare, and Medicaid to deliver precise guidance that allows operational teams to execute initiatives without violating compliance obligations.
- Partner with the Director of Compliance to map regulatory risk exposure and proactively shape strategic decisions that align with long-term compliance objectives.
- Advise Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Revenue Cycle teams on the compliant design of new features, ensuring that workflows respect payer rules and privacy obligations from the outset.
- Execute audits of internal processes and monitor ongoing compliance activities, then coordinate targeted remediation plans for payer programs and privacy standards that may be at risk.
- Draft, revise, and maintain internal policies, training materials, and operational playbooks so that every team understands how to comply with evolving legal requirements.
- Embed compliance controls directly into technical systems and business processes, creating guardrails that prevent non-compliant actions before they occur.
- Review vendor contracts and business associate agreements to confirm that they meet regulatory standards and protect Solace from downstream liability.
- Lead investigations into potential compliance issues involving billing, documentation, and privacy, and recommend corrective actions that mitigate future risk.
- Monitor regulatory updates and CMS guidance on an ongoing basis, translating complex changes into clear implications for company strategy and execution.
- Build and maintain compliance frameworks that support rapid, lawful expansion across all 50 states, ensuring consistency without sacrificing necessary flexibility.
- Facilitate cross-functional workshops that align stakeholders on regulatory expectations, clarify implementation steps, and resolve interpretation conflicts.
- Create compliance metrics and reporting structures that measure program effectiveness over time and highlight areas requiring additional oversight or resources.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external regulators and legal counsel when inquiries or assessments emerge, protecting the company through timely, accurate responses.
- Drive a company-wide culture of compliance by designing and delivering training, communications, and leadership messaging that reinforces responsible behavior.
Requirements
- Hold a Juris Doctor degree and maintain active bar admission in at least one U.S. state, demonstrating that you are a licensed attorney authorized to practice law.
- Bring three to six years of professional experience in regulatory or compliance legal practice within healthcare or highly regulated industries.
- Show proven ability to navigate ambiguous environments and evolving business models without sacrificing legal rigor or ethical standards.
- Demonstrate experience managing audits, investigations, and compliance program operations from end to end, including remediation and follow-up.
- Use strong judgment to balance legal risk against business speed, ensuring that decisions are both legally sound and commercially practical.
- Be physically based in the United States, as this role requires adherence to U.S. regulatory expectations and legal jurisdiction.
- Possess documented experience interpreting and applying HIPAA, Medicare, and Medicaid regulations to real-world operational scenarios.
- Show familiarity with federal and state healthcare compliance frameworks and awareness of current enforcement trends affecting payer programs and privacy rules.
- Communicate effectively in writing and speaking, engaging both legal and non-legal audiences with clarity, precision, and empathy.
- Act with the highest level of integrity and discretion when handling sensitive patient information and confidential organizational data.
- Maintain a detail-oriented mindset capable of reviewing complex documents, identifying nuanced compliance implications, and catching subtle issues before they escalate.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet firm deadlines in a dynamic, growth-stage environment that demands agility.
Nice to have
- Bring familiarity with CMS programs and Medicare billing requirements, including claims submission rules and coverage policies.
- Show knowledge of healthcare documentation standards and privacy laws beyond HIPAA, such as state-level confidentiality obligations and data security expectations.
