About the company
The FIDO Alliance is an open industry association launched in February 2013. The organization develops and promotes authentication standards to reduce global reliance on passwords. It addresses the lack of interoperability among devices that use strong authentication. The alliance works to solve problems users face when creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. The association supports a full range of authentication technologies. These include biometrics such as fingerprint and iris scanners, voice recognition, and facial recognition. The standards also cover existing solutions like Trusted Platform Modules, USB security tokens, and embedded Secure Elements. Smart cards and near-field communication are supported as well. A USB security token may authenticate using a simple password or by pressing a button. The specifications emphasize a device-centric model. Authentication over an insecure channel uses public-key cryptography. A user device registers to a server by registering a public key. To authenticate, the device signs a challenge from the server using a private key stored on the device. Keys on the device are unlocked by a local user gesture such as a biometric or a button press. The alliance provides two types of user experiences depending on the protocol used. Both protocols define a common interface at the client for any local authentication method the user exercises.
