About the role
Smardt, a leader in the manufacturing of cooling solutions, is seeking an experienced In-house Lawyer to join our dynamic team in Dorval, Quebec. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with various departments, providing legal guidance and support on a range of corporate matters. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of corporate law, contract negotiation, and compliance, ensuring that Smardt operates within legal frameworks while pursuing its business objectives.

What you'll do
- Provide comprehensive legal advice to various departments, including operations, sales, and human resources, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts, including supplier agreements, customer contracts, and partnership agreements, to protect the company's interests.
- Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant issues, staying updated on changes in legislation that may impact the company's operations.
- Collaborate with external legal counsel when necessary, managing relationships and overseeing the provision of legal services.
- Develop and implement corporate policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal standards and best practices.
- Assist in the management of disputes and litigation, providing strategic advice to mitigate risks and resolve issues effectively.
- Support the company in regulatory compliance matters, including environmental, health, and safety regulations pertinent to the manufacturing industry.
- Provide training and guidance to employees on legal issues, fostering a culture of compliance and ethical conduct within the organization.
- Participate in strategic planning sessions, contributing legal insights to support business objectives and initiatives.
- Monitor and report on legal risks and compliance issues to senior management, ensuring proactive measures are taken to address potential challenges.
- Assist in mergers and acquisitions, providing legal due diligence and support throughout the transaction process.
- Maintain accurate records of legal documents and correspondence, ensuring that all files are organized and accessible for reference.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in corporate law, preferably in an in-house legal environment or within the manufacturing sector.
- Strong knowledge of contract law, corporate governance, and compliance regulations.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a detail-oriented approach to legal issues.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, demonstrating a proactive and positive attitude.
Nice to have
- Experience in international business law or cross-border transactions.
- Familiarity with environmental regulations relevant to manufacturing operations.
- Bilingual proficiency in French and English, both written and spoken, is an asset.
- Previous experience in a fast-paced corporate environment, particularly in the HVAC or cooling solutions industry.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in legal research tools and software, such as Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Familiarity with contract management systems and document automation tools.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Word and Excel, for drafting and analyzing legal documents.
- Knowledge of compliance management software is a plus.

- This position is based in Dorval, Quebec, and may require occasional travel to other company locations or client sites.
