About the role
You will own the legal strategy required to bring new financial products to market and ensure that Slash delivers on its promise of industry-specific banking built for how businesses actually operate. You will serve as the primary legal thought partner to the product and commercial teams, translating complex regulatory constraints into clear pathways for execution. You will review and negotiate a wide array of commercial agreements that underpin our revenue and partnerships, always with an eye on risk mitigation and business enablement. You will help design the compliance frameworks that allow experimental features to launch safely and responsibly within evolving regulatory environments. You will leverage automation and AI tools to streamline legal workflows, increase accuracy, and free the team to focus on higher-value work. You will act as a key operator within the leadership team, collaborating directly with founders to align legal strategy with ambitious business goals. You will manage relationships with external counsel and service providers to ensure cost-effective and coordinated support. The role demands a high level of ownership, creativity, and judgment as you help the company move quickly without sacrificing clarity or compliance.

What you'll do
- Analyze emerging regulatory trends and translate them into actionable guidance for product and commercial initiatives across digital assets and banking services.
- Design and implement legal structures that allow Slash to launch new financial products, features, and stablecoin integrations while maintaining rigorous risk management.
- Draft, revise, and finalize complex commercial contracts, including partnership, vendor, and customer agreements, ensuring terms protect the company and support scalable growth.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to embed legal requirements directly into product specifications and user workflows from the earliest stages of development.
- Build and maintain a robust framework of internal templates, playbooks, and standard operating procedures that reduce bottlenecks and support fast, repeatable decision-making.
- Lead negotiations with banks, fintech partners, and infrastructure providers, structuring relationships that align incentives and manage counterparty risk effectively.
- Partner with compliance and risk management to develop policies, monitoring mechanisms, and reporting processes that keep the company ahead of regulatory expectations.
- Evaluate and oversee external legal counsel engagements to ensure efficient use of resources, clear deliverables, and alignment with Slash's operational tempo.
- Identify potential legal and regulatory obstacles, then propose practical, business-aware solutions that keep initiatives moving forward without undue delay.
- Serve as the central point for legal documentation related to commercial relationships, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and ease of access for internal stakeholders.
- Work cross-functionally with leadership, finance, and operations to assess the legal implications of strategic decisions and partnership opportunities.
- Support the development of AI-native workflows and tools, ensuring that legal considerations around data, privacy, and intellectual property are addressed proactively.
- Represent Slash in discussions with regulators and other stakeholders when required, communicating our business model and compliance posture clearly and confidently.
- Continuously assess the effectiveness of existing agreements and processes, recommending updates that reflect changes in the market, technology, and regulation.
Requirements
- You must have 5 or more years of legal experience gained in law firms, in-house roles, or government positions.
- You must demonstrate strong generalist capabilities covering commercial, regulatory, and product-related legal work.
- You must have direct experience working within fintech, financial services, banking, or high-growth technology companies.
- You must possess excellent judgment that allows you to balance legal risk with business objectives in a fast-moving environment.
- You must communicate clearly and concisely, both in writing and in verbal discussions with diverse stakeholders.
- You must be able to work effectively across functions, partnering with product, engineering, and leadership teams under tight deadlines.
- You must operate with a very high ownership mindset, taking initiative and following through on complex matters independently.
- You must be comfortable making decisions and providing guidance even when information is incomplete or rapidly changing.
Nice to have
- You have experience supporting the expansion of consumer products, capabilities, or regulatory frameworks in new jurisdictions.
- You are familiar with crypto, stablecoins, or AI technologies and their associated legal and operational implications.
- You have prior experience at an early-stage or scaling startup where agility and adaptability were essential.
- You have experience building legal processes and frameworks from scratch in a growing organization.
Practical notes
The position is based in our San Francisco office and requires in-person presence. This is a full-time role with standard work-hour expectations and occasional travel when necessary for business or regulatory engagements.
