Fundable - Backend Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and implementation of the core backend systems that power Fundable's API, AI services, and workflow platform on a daily basis. In this position, you will define the architecture for new customer-facing features and data products, guiding them from initial design through to production deployment with high autonomy. You will make critical architectural decisions and select appropriate frameworks and hosting strategies to ensure scalability and reliability. This role requires you to translate ambiguous requirements into robust technical solutions while maintaining a strong focus on quality and maintainability. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to turn high-level concepts into concrete backend components. The work involves building the foundational layers that enable the entire Fundable ecosystem to function smoothly. Your contributions will directly influence the capabilities of the product and the experience of every customer interacting with the platform.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Specify and implement external APIs by drafting the OpenAPI specification and selecting the optimal hosting and frameworks for the service.
- Construct, deploy, and validate AI microservices that transform natural language queries into precise data filters for internal systems.
- Modernize the Fundable MCP to adopt current API routes, enforce customer-specific authentication mechanisms, and oversee auditable credit charging logic.
- Engineer the complete workflow product, operating similarly to n8n, allowing customers to automate tasks using Fundable data through intuitive interfaces.
- Design the workflow schema, execution model, and deployment topology, addressing concerns like scheduling, persistence, retries, and third-party integrations.
- Implement resilient data pipelines that ensure integrity and consistency across distributed systems and asynchronous job processing.
- Establish observability practices by instrumenting logs, metrics, and traces to monitor system health and troubleshoot issues efficiently.
- Evaluate and integrate appropriate storage solutions for structured and unstructured data, balancing performance, cost, and durability requirements.
- Partner with product managers to translate business objectives into technical specifications that align with long-term platform strategy.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing code reviews, technical guidance, and best practices for building scalable backend services.
- Conduct performance testing and optimization to ensure that services meet latency and throughput targets under load.
- Define security policies and implement safeguards to protect sensitive data and maintain compliance with industry standards.
- Manage the lifecycle of backend services from conception through retirement, including versioning, deprecation, and documentation.
- Support the deployment process by creating automation scripts and infrastructure as code to streamline release cycles.
Requirements
- Demonstrate proven experience in backend engineering, having built production systems from the ground up without relying on tutorials or copied code.
- Show strong proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js or Python, and possess deep knowledge of SQL and Postgres for data modeling and query optimization.
- Exhibit a background in designing APIs, data models, and distributed jobs, including robust strategies for authentication, idempotency, retries, and observability.
- Display the ability to leverage AI tools such as Claude or Codex to create maintainable and modular systems without compromising code quality or long-term maintainability.
- Have practical experience with LLM-backed systems, agentic frameworks, RAG architectures, structured outputs, evaluations, and deterministic validation techniques.
- Prove clear product judgment and the capacity to communicate effectively when operating in dynamic and poorly defined problem spaces.
- Illustrate experience deploying production systems on major cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Azure, understanding their nuances and cost implications.
- Commit to writing clean, tested, and well-documented code that can be maintained by other engineers over extended periods.
- Engage actively in the software development lifecycle, participating in design discussions, code reviews, and retrospectives to improve team processes.
- Maintain a strong sense of ownership for the systems you build, taking responsibility for their reliability, performance, and security.
Nice to have
- Bring experience with open-source LLMs and understand their strengths and limitations in production environments.
- Possess a background in search technologies, entity resolution, workflow engines, or complex data products that require advanced querying.
- Have hands-on experience with GCP services, specifically Google Cloud Run, and containerized deployment strategies.
- Show competence in React/Next.js and the capability to deliver customer-facing product flows that integrate with backend services.
- Demonstrate familiarity with Supabase, Vercel, Clerk, and Stripe, including their configuration and best practices.
