About the role
The Senior Product Counsel will be a pivotal member of Sierra's legal team, acting as the primary legal strategist for product and engineering initiatives. This role owns the end-to-end legal counseling of AI-driven products from initial concept through global launch. You will partner closely with technical teams to embed privacy-by-design and AI transparency directly into the product development lifecycle. The position requires deep expertise in navigating the legal complexities of emerging technologies, particularly AI. You will shape how Sierra's products go to market responsibly while balancing innovation with risk management. You will advise on regulatory requirements and help build scalable processes that enable speed without compromising compliance. Ultimately, you will ensure that product decisions are legally sound and aligned with Sierra's core values.

What you'll do
Provide end-to-end legal counsel to product and engineering teams for Sierra's agent platform and new AI products, covering concept through launch.
Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate privacy-by-design principles and AI transparency measures into product development workflows.
Advise customer-facing Agent Development teams on legal requirements for product features, including consumer protection and telecommunications regulations for voice and messaging.
Develop and maintain scalable product review processes, launch checklists, and self-serve guidance to accelerate product team execution while ensuring compliance.
Monitor and interpret emerging AI-specific regulations, advising product leadership on how new laws affect Sierra's product roadmap and design choices.
Partner with the privacy team to implement and evolve AI governance policies and frameworks that ensure responsible AI deployment.
Evaluate legal risks associated with new product features, balancing business objectives with compliance obligations in a fast-paced environment.
Assess regulatory implications for products sold into regulated industries such as healthcare and financial services.
Contribute to the development of trust and safety and responsible AI programs, including policy documentation and risk assessments for machine learning models.
Analyze voice and telephony-related regulations, such as TCPA and state call recording laws, to ensure product features meet compliance standards.
Work cross-functionally to understand complex product designs and translate technical details into clear legal guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
Promote a culture of compliance within the product organization by building trust and strong working relationships with product managers and engineers.
Support the creation of documentation that helps product teams move quickly while staying within legal guardrails.
Serve as a trusted legal partner, available to help the business navigate ambiguity and prioritize legal risks without stifling innovation.
Requirements
Possess 8+ years of legal experience, including a combination of large international law firm and in-house experience at a technology company.
Have deep experience advising product and engineering teams on new product development, especially in areas involving AI/ML, communications, or platform products.
Demonstrate working knowledge of legal domains relevant to product development, including privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA, AI regulatory frameworks, consumer protection, and intellectual property.
Show ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams to understand all aspects of Sierra's product offerings and associated risks.
Exhibit strong analytical skills to evaluate complex legal issues and balance legal risks with business priorities.
Possess strong verbal and written communication skills to partner with both legal and non-legal stakeholders across the organization.
Maintain a strong work ethic with meticulous attention to detail, striving for perfection and expecting the same from others.
