This position involves leading a dedicated team responsible for creating the foundational internal platforms, configuration systems, and traffic management solutions that allow product engineers to scale their services effectively.

What you'll do
- Lead a team of engineers focused on developing internal control platforms that are critical for the safe operation of services across Sentry.
- Enhance the Infrastructure Engineering platform, which includes managing configurations, directing traffic, and controlling environments.
- Set the technical vision for the team, influencing the design of APIs, internal tools, and automation frameworks.
- Foster the professional growth of engineers through mentorship, coaching, and support for career advancement.
- Build and maintain a high-performing, inclusive team culture that emphasizes ownership, continuous learning, and successful delivery of projects.
- Collaborate closely with Production Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and Developer Infrastructure teams to ensure consistent operational tooling across the organization.
- Manage the reliability, adoption, and strategic roadmap of the tools developed by the team, advocating for technical excellence and sound decision-making practices.
- Engage with cross-functional teams to align priorities and ensure that infrastructure, platform, and product objectives are met.
- Drive initiatives that enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of internal systems, contributing to Sentry's long-term success.
- Participate in strategic planning and resource allocation to support the team's goals and objectives.
- Evaluate and implement new technologies and methodologies to improve team performance and service reliability.
- Act as a liaison between engineering teams and upper management, communicating progress and challenges effectively.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on internal tooling, infrastructure automation, platform engineering, or distributed systems.
- At least 4 years of experience in engineering management, demonstrating success in team development and leadership.
- Proven experience as a Tech Lead or Engineering Manager, with a track record of guiding the architecture and long-term evolution of internal control platforms or similar systems.
- Strong backend or full-stack engineering capabilities, particularly with proficiency in Python.
- Experience in leading and delivering multi-year engineering projects in a leadership or technical leadership role.
- Ability to navigate across organizational boundaries, aligning priorities between infrastructure, platform, and product teams effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with container orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
- Experience with infrastructure as code tools, particularly Terraform.
- Understanding of cloud service providers and their offerings (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Previous experience in a startup environment or fast-paced tech company.
- Knowledge of best practices in DevOps and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) methodologies.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in Python programming language.
- Experience with Kubernetes for container orchestration.
- Familiarity with Terraform for infrastructure management.
- Strong systems thinking ability to abstract and simplify complex infrastructure challenges.
- Knowledge of monitoring and logging tools to ensure system reliability and performance.
- Understanding of network protocols and security best practices.
