The Engineering Manager, Backend (Gaming)
WWE Champions at Scopely is a leadership position focused on the reliable operation of live-service backend systems in Bangalore. You will own the technical strategy and execution for infrastructure that powers a globally distributed RPG puzzle match game experience. This role requires deep ownership of systems that manage live game configuration, content delivery, feature controls, and backend runtime at massive scale. Success in this position is defined by your ability to ensure operational reliability while guiding team health and technical direction. You will be responsible for protecting the player experience through robust systems and clear operational practices. This is a full-time opportunity based in Bangalore with a compensation range aligned to senior leadership impact.

What you'll do
- Define technical direction for backend platforms and live configuration tooling to ensure WWE Champions remains stable and performant under global load.
- Guide blueprint packaging, environment promotion, and caching workflows to deliver content to players without disruption or downtime.
- Establish observability standards and incident response practices that enable rapid detection and resolution of issues affecting live matches.
- Review and improve deployment and publishing flows to reduce risk when releasing server controls, A/B tests, and player segmentation changes.
- Coordinate closely with product and operations teams to define feature rollouts, segment logic, and testing windows for complex live events.
- Partner with senior engineers to guide the modernization of Python, Django, Redis, and DynamoDB services within a high-traffic match system.
- Champion reliability for backend services that support matchmaking, progression systems, and live-ops commands at millions of requests per second.
- Build structured feedback channels between designers, analysts, and QA to maintain safe and efficient configuration tools and workflows.
- Lead incident reviews and refine operational playbooks to harden systems that directly affect the player journey and retention.
- Drive best practices in deployment safety, monitoring, and configuration management across the backend engineering organization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate player behavior data into technical improvements and system optimizations.
- Mentor engineers on backend technologies, distributed systems patterns, and production readiness for live-service games.
- Ensure that all backend changes align with business objectives while maintaining strict standards for performance and security.
- Act as a bridge between engineering execution and strategic product goals for WWE Champions and related live-service titles.
Requirements
- Bring a strong background in software engineering and technical leadership with at least 6 years of professional experience.
- Include at least one year of hands-on experience managing people and backend services in production environments.
- Demonstrate a proven track record of managing live-service or game backend platforms that require high availability and careful rollout.
- Communicate effectively with product, design, analytics, QA, and operations while balancing execution speed with platform health and stability.
- Maintain a solid backend foundation in Python, Django, RESTful API design, distributed systems, caching strategies, and asynchronous processing.
- Show hands-on familiarity with Redis, DynamoDB, blueprint-driven runtime behavior, and deployment safety for server-side flows.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make technical decisions under pressure in a live-service context.
- Display ownership of complex systems and the willingness to drive improvements across engineering processes and tooling.
- Demonstrate experience working within fast-moving product environments while preserving long-term platform integrity.
- Commit to maintaining best practices in monitoring, observability, and incident management for critical player-facing systems.
