Senior Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and delivery of the core systems that evaluate safety risk detections and determine which events are surfaced to customers. You will shape ambiguous, high-impact products end-to-end while balancing detection precision, scalability, and real-world operational constraints. You will build intelligent triage workflows that automate low-risk cases and surface ambiguous situations for human review. You will partner closely with AI, product, and design teams to turn review outcomes into actionable model feedback loops. You will use AI-assisted engineering pragmatically to accelerate prototyping while maintaining strict reliability and code quality standards. You will own complex projects from technical design through rollout, measurement, and continuous iteration in production. You will directly influence customer trust and value by ensuring that today's detections translate into meaningful risk reduction in the field.
Key facts
What you'll do
Build and evolve the core systems that review safety detections and determine which events are surfaced to customers.
Improve detection precision by developing intelligent approaches to identifying ambiguous cases, deflecting low-value reviews, and automating triage where confidence is high.
Work at the intersection of backend systems, data, and AI-driven decisioning to improve both customer-facing product quality and internal review efficiency.
Partner closely with product, design, AI, and ML infrastructure teams to turn real-world review outcomes into better model feedback loops and higher-quality safety detections over time.
Own complex projects end-to-end, from shaping the approach and technical design through rollout, measurement, and iteration in production.
Use modern AI-assisted engineering workflows pragmatically to accelerate prototyping, implementation, debugging, and iteration while maintaining strong engineering judgment, reliability, and code quality.
Raise the bar for quality, operability, and maintainability of the systems you ship, including instrumentation, testing, and clear ownership.
Collaborate with data science and reliability teams to ensure detection models are performant, explainable, and aligned with real-world operational needs.
Contribute to an architecture that scales globally across devices and regions while meeting strict latency, privacy, and compliance requirements.
Represent Samsara in customer interviews and feedback sessions to ensure delivered solutions reflect real operational realities.
Drive measurable improvements in customer outcomes by connecting metrics from detections to field results and operational KPIs.
Continuously learn and adapt to new AI techniques, safety standards, and best practices in the connected operations domain.
Requirements
You have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
You have 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of delivering reliable, scalable systems.
You are proficient in backend development with languages such as Java, Python, Go, or equivalent, and have experience building services that handle high throughput and low latency.
You have hands-on experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and infrastructure-as-code practices commonly used in production-scale systems.
You are comfortable working with data pipelines, event-driven architectures, and databases while understanding trade-offs between consistency, availability, and performance.
You have experience integrating AI and ML models into production systems, including working with model outputs, feedback loops, and monitoring for degradation.
You have a strong understanding of software reliability, including monitoring, alerting, testing, and incident response in distributed systems.
You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and making sound technical decisions with incomplete information on behalf of customers and stakeholders.
You communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, data scientists, and customer-facing organizations.
Nice to have
Experience with computer vision, video analytics, or safety and compliance domains is a plus given the nature of our products and customers.
Familiarity with IoT data streams, telematics, or connected vehicle ecosystems would help you understand the context of detections and field operations.
Background in safety-critical systems, driver monitoring, or industrial operations would deepen your ability to align technical decisions with real-world risk.
Experience contributing to open source or building internal developer tools that improve team productivity and system maintainability.
