Automation Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the full lifecycle of automated test development for Roku TV hardware platforms, from requirement analysis through execution and triage. This role is hands-on engineering where you design, write, and maintain production-grade Python tests that validate firmware and features on real devices in the lab. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and accuracy of our test automation suites that gate every TV release. You will investigate failures at any hour, including in partner factories, and provide clear evidence to drive fixes. You will use AI-assisted development as a core part of your workflow, leveraging coding agents to generate tests and analyze issues while remaining accountable for correctness. You will collaborate closely with vendors, channel partners, and internal teams to deliver high quality products and the right quality signals.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design, develop, and maintain automated test cases and suites for Roku TV firmware and features using Python and our internal automation framework.
Own the reliability of the automation you write, investigating flaky and broken tests and isolating whether a failure originates from script, infrastructure, firmware, or product.
Triage automation failures reported by partners and internal NPI teams, reproduce issues, determine root cause, and either fix the script or route the defect with clear evidence.
Convert manual test cases from the NPI backlog into reliable automated coverage, including hardware-dependent scenarios such as IR/RF remote control, relays, cameras, and audio capture.
Integrate and maintain tests within CI/CD pipelines, keeping suites green, fast, and trustworthy across multiple TV platforms.
Review peers' automation code and uphold standards for maintainability, structure, and verification.
Work directly with hardware in the loop, running automated Sanity, Smoke, DVT, and PVT suites that gate every TV release against real devices in our lab.
Analyze requirements and translate them into test strategies, test steps, and validation criteria that ensure product quality before mass production.
Provide clear documentation and reporting on test results, failures, and trends to support decision-making by cross-functional teams.
Partner with firmware engineers, vendors, and channel teams to debug issues found in the lab or in factory environments.
Continuously improve the automation framework, tools, and processes to increase coverage, stability, and execution efficiency.
Leverage AI-assisted development tools, including coding agents, to generate tests, analyze failures, and interact with devices while ensuring correctness and reliability.
Demonstrate strong debugging skills to isolate intermittent failures and distinguish between environmental noise and genuine product defects.
Act as an owner of quality for the TV release process, ensuring that only validated builds progress to the next stage.
Contribute to the broader testing community at Roku by sharing best practices and collaborating on automation standards.
Requirements
You have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
You possess 3+ years of experience in test automation, with a strong portfolio of automated test projects.
You are fluent in Python, with hands-on experience writing and maintaining production-level test code.
You have experience working with hardware in the loop, including physical devices, relays, cameras, and sensors used in automated testing.
You understand CI/CD concepts and have experience integrating automated tests into pipelines for large scale device fleets.
You have a proven ability to debug complex, intermittent failures in automated test suites and to distinguish between script, infrastructure, and product issues.
You are comfortable working in fast-paced, cross-functional environments with vendors, partners, and internal engineering teams.
You have strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document test results and root cause analysis.
Nice to have
Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as coding agents, MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks.
Demonstrated history of using automation to move quickly, raise quality bars, and scale impact in a previous role.
