About the role
The Senior Threat Investigator will own the deep-dive investigative lifecycle for the most severe and externally significant safety matters on the Roblox platform. They will conduct proactive actor-centric and network-centric investigations to uncover sophisticated threat actors and complex abuse ecosystems. This role requires connecting fragmented internal and external signals into clear, defensible investigative findings that inform strategic decisions. The investigator will advance Roblox's investigative capabilities, playbooks, and systems to surface, analyze, and disrupt high-risk behaviors at scale. They will develop high-quality work product that supports internal leadership and external law enforcement engagement where appropriate. The role demands comfort reviewing graphic, controversial, and offensive content in strict accordance with Roblox's handling policies.

What you'll do
- Conduct deep-dive investigations into severe abuse on and around the platform, including cases involving child exploitation, violent extremism, organized criminal activity, and other complex abuse ecosystems.
- Perform actor-centric and network-centric investigations that connect activity across accounts, services, platforms, and other relevant data sources.
- Proactively hunt for threats, undetected abuse, and emerging risk patterns by leveraging internal datasets, open-source intelligence, and other investigative resources.
- Apply analytical rigor to investigations while identifying strategic opportunities to improve systems, tools, processes, and detection capabilities.
- Develop proactive leads from intelligence reporting, law enforcement indicators, media reporting, partner referrals, and open-source research.
- Draft professional investigative work product for internal and external audiences, supported by clear, concise, and multi-sourced evidence.
- Prepare complex referrals, supplements, strategic write-ups, and post-mortems that can withstand external scrutiny and inform policy decisions.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including safety policy, engineering, data science, and product to operationalize investigative insights.
- Drive the continuous enhancement of investigative methodologies, tooling, and playbooks to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Serve as a subject matter expert within the organization, mentoring peers and contributing to the development of best practices for threat investigation.
- Partner with external stakeholders, including law enforcement and industry partners, to exchange critical information and support coordinated responses.
- Maintain awareness of evolving threat landscapes, adversarial tactics, and relevant regulatory considerations to ensure investigations remain current and robust.
- Prioritize and manage multiple concurrent investigations in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of accuracy and discretion.
- Contribute to the development of risk assessments and strategic recommendations based on investigative trends and insights.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of investigative experience in a relevant field such as law enforcement, intelligence, cybersecurity, or compliance.
- Demonstrated experience conducting complex, actor-centric and network-centric investigations involving severe safety and security threats.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with the ability to synthesize large volumes of disparate data into coherent narratives.
- Proven ability to write clear, professional, and evidence-based investigative reports for both internal and external audiences.
- Experience working with internal and external data sources, including open-source intelligence, logs, and platform telemetry.
- Familiarity with safety and compliance frameworks relevant to online platforms is highly relevant.
- Strong judgment and discretion when handling sensitive, confidential, or graphic material.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Willingness to undergo background checks and meet Roblox's employment eligibility requirements.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require work authorization sponsorship for this position at the time of hire.
- Must be based in or be willing to relocate to San Mateo, California, United States.
