As an Engineering Manager for the Home Infrastructure team at Roblox, you will play a role in shaping the backend and data systems that support some of the platform's most crucial features. This position involves leading a talented group of engineers who are responsible for the infrastructure behind the Homepage and Experience Details Page, which are among the most visited areas on Roblox. What you'll do

• Lead a team of Backend and Data Engineers focused on developing and maintaining the infrastructure that powers Roblox's Homepage and other critical discovery surfaces.
• Define and implement a comprehensive technical roadmap that encompasses large-scale content discovery, personalization, ranking, and backend-serving systems.
• Spearhead initiatives such as Personalization-as-a-Platform, real-time user signal infrastructure, and observability for ranking systems to enhance user experience.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Machine Learning, Data Science, Product, Design, and Frontend, to ensure alignment and maximize product impact.
• Foster a engineering culture that prioritizes technical excellence, reliability, and operational health while promoting talent development within the team.
• Drive the execution of high-impact projects that contribute to user engagement, retention, and overall platform growth.
• Mentor and support engineers in their professional development, encouraging a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years of experience in a managerial role, preferably as an Engineering Manager or Tech Lead, with a focus on backend, data, ranking, recommendation, search, ads, or personalization teams.
• Demonstrated technical expertise in distributed systems, service-oriented architecture, and high-throughput backend platforms.
• Proven experience in leading teams that develop and maintain large-scale, consumer-facing production systems with a strong emphasis on reliability and performance.
• A successful track record of delivering complex technical initiatives that have resulted in measurable product or business outcomes.
• Experience in nurturing engineering talent, developing future technical leaders, and building high-performing teams.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across various teams and disciplines.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with machine learning concepts and their application in backend systems.
• Experience with product experimentation and A/B testing methodologies.
• Knowledge of content distribution networks and their role in enhancing user experience.
• Previous involvement in projects that focus on user personalization and recommendation systems.

Skills & tools

• Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in backend development, such as Python, Java, or Go.
• Familiarity with cloud services and infrastructure, particularly AWS or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with data processing frameworks and tools, such as Apache Kafka, Spark, or similar technologies.
• Understanding of database management systems, both SQL and NoSQL, and their application in large-scale environments.

Practical notes

The starting base salary for this position ranges from $295,250 to $345,040 annually, depending on various factors such as experience, location, and market demand. This role is based in San Mateo, CA, and requires onsite presence Tuesday through Thursday, with optional attendance on Mondays and Fridays. Additionally, full-time employees are eligible for equity compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
