Senior Frontend Engineer, Design Systems & Commerce
Job description
About the role
You will architect and ship the customer-facing digital experience for our emerging electric mobility brand, translating bold creative concepts into high-performing, accessible, and conversion-optimized pages. This role owns the core surfaces of our direct-to-consumer journey, including the storefront, product detail pages, collection and category hubs, and a growing gear and merchandise shop. You will act as the critical bridge between design ambition and technical feasibility, ensuring that what users see online behaves consistently, loads quickly, and delights across devices and browsers. You will extend a fast-evolving design system, build self-serve tooling for non-technical partners, and take end-to-end ownership of seasonal campaigns and concurrent promotional initiatives from concept to stable production. You will partner daily with creative, brand, and UX colleagues, making pragmatic tradeoffs to ship beautiful experiences rapidly while maintaining a rigorous standard for performance, quality, and maintainability. This is a greenfield opportunity to define frontend architecture and best practices for a new brand, with significant influence over how customers first experience and interact with the company online. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to define data requirements, API contracts, and metafield strategies that empower merchandising and marketing to iterate independently.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Build and launch an expanding set of customer-facing pages, shortening the gap between creative inspiration and production code while increasing page coverage and reducing time to market.
- Extend and steward the design system, evolving component libraries, design tokens, and composition patterns so that they enable creativity while enforcing consistency and guardrails.
- Architect Shopify theme sections, blocks, metafields, and metaobjects to enable self-serve page assembly by creative and merchandising teams without requiring constant engineering intervention.
- Translate Figma designs, mood boards, and abstract ideas into production-ready pages, actively questioning requirements, proposing alternatives, and making sound technical and design decisions independently.
- Own complex merchandising surfaces such as category and collection pages, faceted navigation and sorting, variant and colorway selection logic, swatch interactions, cross-sell and bundle modules, and availability-aware states.
- Plan, schedule, and execute seasonal and concurrent campaigns across multiple product lines with clean staging, traffic routing, and graceful takedowns to support aggressive launch timelines.
- Enforce a strict quality bar by implementing and validating Core Web Vitals, accessibility against WCAG 2.1 AA, responsive behavior, cross-browser compatibility, and robust analytics instrumentation as non-negotiable parts of the definition of done.
- Collaborate with backend engineering to define clear data and API contracts, integrate with commerce, catalog, and account systems, and maintain a clean boundary between presentation and business logic.
- Contribute to strategic decisions about navigation, sort defaults, pagination versus infinite scroll, color and variant presentation, and how these choices affect conversion and user experience.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented frontend code that other engineers and partners can easily extend, debug, and onboard to without extensive context switching.
- Advocate for performance and accessibility from the earliest stages of feature conception, ensuring that these qualities are built in rather than bolted on later.
- Work autonomously on ambiguous problems, ask incisive questions, drive toward shipped outcomes, and reduce dependency on detailed specification before starting implementation.
- Participate actively in code reviews, share knowledge across the frontend and broader product teams, and mentor partners on best practices for using the tools you build.
Requirements
- You must have strong, hands-on experience with Shopify, including deep work with Liquid, Online Store 2.0 theme architecture, sections, blocks, metafields, and metaobjects.
- You must have built for multi-product-line brands, managing catalogs that mix hard goods, apparel, accessories, parts, and merchandise with distinctly different display and checkout requirements.
- You must have shipped seasonal drops and multi-campaign storefronts, maintaining code quality and avoiding an accumulation of one-off templates as complexity grows.
- You must have real experience building or significantly extending a design system and component library and translating Figma design systems into durable, composable frontend code.
- You must be an expert in modern frontend development, including JavaScript or TypeScript, CSS architecture, and at least one modern component framework such as React.
- You must have deep, practical opinions and experience building category and collection pages, including faceted navigation, sort strategies, pagination versus infinite scroll, and color or variant presentation patterns.
- You must treat performance and accessibility as defaults, with strong instincts and demonstrated execution around Core Web Vitals, image and font strategies, and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
- You must be able to take ambiguous creative direction, ask sharp questions, and deliver shipped results with minimal hand-holding or fully specified tickets.
- You must communicate effectively and confidently with designers about craft and with backend engineers about data contracts and system boundaries.
- You must have a minimum of 6 years of professional frontend engineering experience, including at least 3 years focused on commerce storefronts.
Nice to have
- Experience with Shopify Hydrogen, Shopify Oxygen, or other headless approaches and the tradeoffs involved in choosing a headless architecture.
- Experience within the Shopify partner ecosystem, including working with or submitting apps to the Shopify App Store.
