About the role
Relativity is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to develop industrial automation for our multi-robot manufacturing platform. You will design the electrical architecture for coordinated robotic systems, including mobile platforms and robotic arms, to advance our additive manufacturing capabilities. In this role, you will own the end-to-end electrical design cycle for critical manufacturing systems from initial concept through production validation. You will define system requirements, create high-level and detailed schematics, and translate complex mechanical and software requirements into robust electrical solutions. This position requires a systems-level thinker who can bridge the gap between theoretical design and real-world industrial deployment. You will ensure that our electrical systems meet stringent reliability, safety, and performance standards in a demanding manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will act as a technical leader, guiding junior engineers and collaborating closely with cross-functional partners to deliver scalable automation infrastructure.

What you'll do
- Architect comprehensive electrical systems for robotic arms, autonomous mobile robots, and manufacturing equipment, defining block diagrams and interface control documents.
- Manage complex power distribution and routing for low-voltage and high-current systems, ensuring reliable delivery to motors, sensors, and onboard compute platforms.
- Lead the design and integration of battery-powered subsystems, encompassing charging strategies, real-time monitoring, and protective circuitry implementation.
- Collaborate with mechanical and software teams on mechatronic packaging, thermal management strategies, and electrical component mounting configurations.
- Validate overall system performance through rigorous testing methodologies and ensure strict adherence to safety-critical engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain detailed electrical documentation, including wiring diagrams, bill of materials, and test procedures to support manufacturing and field operations.
- Implement signal integrity and noise mitigation strategies for sensitive sensor and communication lines within high-electromagnetic environments.
- Partner with manufacturing engineering to optimize electrical assembly processes, test procedures, and in-circuit validation methods for high-volume production.
- Integrate industrial communication protocols to enable seamless data exchange between controllers, drives, sensors, and supervisory systems.
- Conduct failure mode analysis and root cause investigations for electrical hardware issues, driving corrective actions to improve system robustness.
- Define and enforce electrical test protocols for prototype evaluation, compliance verification, and final product validation stages.
- Support the development of automated test equipment and fixtures used for electrical verification during the manufacturing process.
- Mentor engineering technicians and junior engineers, providing technical guidance on best practices for electrical design and debug.
- Contribute to the development of intellectual property and proprietary techniques related to industrial automation and electromechanical integration.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a closely related technical field.
- Possess 4 or more years of professional experience in industrial automation, robotic systems, or advanced manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrate 3 or more years of dedicated experience designing electrical systems for complex electromechanical platforms or robotic applications.
- Show proficiency in power system design, with a focus on high-current devices, power conversion, and mixed-power environment architectures.
- Exhibit strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues within industrial hardware platforms.
- Display willingness to utilize AI agents within engineering workflows to accelerate design iterations and documentation processes.
- Maintain the ability to interpret and adhere to rigorous safety standards, industry regulations, and electrical code requirements relevant to manufacturing systems.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills to articulate technical concepts to multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Experience with industrial protocols such as EtherCAT, CANbus, or Ethernet/IP for real-time control and networking.
- Background in autonomous mobile robot (AMR) development, including navigation stacks and sensor fusion techniques.
- Familiarity with PLCs and industrial control platforms like Beckhoff TwinCAT or similar programmable automation controllers.
- Knowledge of motion control systems, including kinematics, trajectory planning, and feedback loop tuning.
- Experience with industrial machinery processes such as welding, milling, or grinding applications and their electrical integration.
- Skills in electrical-mechanical integration and subsystem structural packaging for harsh industrial environments.
Practical notes
This is a full-time position based in Long Beach, California. Compensation includes a base salary and equity awards.
