About the role
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling - keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we're delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have. At Redwood, we are architecting the future of grid-scale energy storage and circular energy ecosystems. As we rapidly scale our stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), we are looking for a Battery Software Integration Engineer to build the bridge between diverse, second-life automotive batteries and our modern, scalable software platforms. You will be instrumental in making varied OEM packs operate seamlessly off-vehicle, turning proprietary automotive components into reliable building blocks for the grid. You will serve as the lead Software POC for external OEMs, steering the critical technical discussions necessary to successfully adapt and integrate their battery systems into our architecture.

What you'll do
Architect and implement software integration layers that translate proprietary OEM battery protocols and control logic into standardized, grid-ready energy storage services.
Lead the technical discovery and negotiation with tier-1 automotive OEMs, defining software and firmware interfaces required for second-life pack compatibility.
Design and maintain robust API gateways and translation services that enable heterogeneous battery systems to operate cohesively within a unified control stack.
Develop and validate communication drivers and data models that accurately represent the state-of-health and operational limits of diverse battery assets.
Collaborate with hardware and field engineering teams to diagnose integration issues, refine system behavior, and ensure reliable performance in real-world deployments.
Own the end-to-end software integration roadmap for key OEM partners, aligning product timelines with platform scalability and reliability goals.
Implement rigorous testing and validation frameworks that verify safety, performance, and compliance across a wide spectrum of battery form factors and control protocols.
Act as the primary technical advisor to internal stakeholders and external partners, articulating complex integration constraints and proposed solutions with clarity and precision.
Drive the adoption of software-defined energy storage practices by building reusable integration patterns and comprehensive documentation for future programs.
Champion continuous improvement by monitoring field performance data, feeding insights back into product and design iterations that enhance longevity and value.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Demonstrated experience developing software integration layers for hardware systems, with a strong grasp of protocols, state machines, and real-time control.
Proficiency in at least one modern systems programming language such as Rust, C++, or Python, with a track record of writing safe, maintainable, and performant code.
Solid understanding of battery management systems, including data structures such as CAN bus, State of Charge, State of Health, and safety limits.
Experience working with automotive OEMs or Tier-1 suppliers, navigating complex technical negotiations and translating requirements into engineering tasks.
Strong familiarity with energy storage systems and the unique characteristics of second-life electric vehicle batteries.
Proven ability to design and deploy distributed software systems that operate reliably at scale in production environments.
Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to synthesize technical details for both engineering and non-technical audiences.
Nice to have
Experience with IEC 61850, DNP3, or other industrial control protocols commonly used in energy infrastructure.
Background in energy markets, grid operations, or utility-scale storage deployments.
Practical notes
Full-time position based in San Francisco, California.
This role may require occasional travel to meet with OEM partners or visit field sites as needed.
