Staff Civil Engineer

About the role

Redwood Materials is on the lookout for an experienced Staff Civil Engineer to become a key member of our EPC Infrastructure Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing civil engineering projects that are vital to our battery manufacturing and recycling operations, as well as our battery energy storage initiatives. You will take charge of the entire project lifecycle, from initial planning and design through to bidding and construction, working closely with both internal teams and external partners to ensure that all designs are compliant and aligned with our sustainability objectives.

What you'll do

• Lead and manage various civil engineering projects from inception to completion, focusing on sitewide infrastructure, plant development, and off-site battery energy storage installations.
• Develop comprehensive civil engineering deliverables, including construction documents, technical drawings, specifications, and calculations that adhere to the International Building Code (IBC), ASCE 7 standards, and local regulations.
• Maintain ongoing communication with both internal and external stakeholders regarding project requirements, progress updates, and timelines.
• Evaluate proposals and designs submitted by vendors, engineers, and architects, ensuring effective coordination across multiple engineering disciplines.
• Supervise external civil engineering consultants, managing their scope of work, deliverables, and budget while providing guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
• Conduct constructability reviews, assist with permitting processes, coordinate with agencies, and address civil-related Requests for Information (RFIs) and field modifications during construction phases.
• Ensure that all design outputs comply with the company's engineering standards, relevant codes, and safety regulations.
• Collaborate with project teams to identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure project success.
• Prepare and present project updates and reports to senior management and stakeholders, highlighting key milestones and challenges.
• Mentor junior engineers and interns, providing guidance and support in their professional development.
• Stay current with industry trends and advancements in civil engineering practices, particularly in relation to sustainable design and construction methods.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline is required; a master's degree is highly desirable.
• A valid Professional Engineer (PE) license is mandatory; candidates must either hold a Nevada license or be able to obtain one within two months of starting.
• A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in the design and construction of high-tech or industrial infrastructure, with a focus on battery energy storage systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in civil engineering design, particularly in stormwater management, heavy civil construction, and industrial operational projects.
• Proven experience in site development, including roadway design, grading, drainage systems, and erosion control measures.
• Proficient in using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and stormwater management software.
• Familiarity with IBC, ASCE 7, and NFPA standards, with the ability to quickly research and understand local regulatory requirements.
• Strong capability to perform and document engineering calculations and design packages in compliance with safety protocols.
• Experience in managing external consultants throughout all phases of projects, including scope definition, scheduling, and budget oversight.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, with occasional travel (up to 10%) required between sites in Nevada.
• Exceptional communication and teamwork abilities to foster effective collaboration with diverse teams, consultants, contractors, and regulatory bodies.

Nice to have

• Previous experience working on battery manufacturing or recycling projects would be advantageous.
• Knowledge of sustainable engineering practices and green building certifications.
• Familiarity with project management software and tools.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position based in McCarran, NV. The salary for this role will be determined based on the candidate's experience and qualifications. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
