About the company
Reddit is an American social media, forum, and news aggregation platform based in San Francisco. University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian launched the site in June 2005, and Aaron Swartz joined them in November 2005. Condé Nast bought the business in October 2006. It later became an independent subsidiary of Advance Publications in 2011. Reddit debuted on the stock market under ticker symbol RDDT on March 21, 2024. The business held a market valuation of 10 billion US dollars in July 2024. Registered users post text, web links, images, and videos inside user-created boards called subreddits. Community members vote on submissions. Posts with high upvote counts rise to the top of subreddits and reach the front page. Site administration handles platform oversight, while unpaid volunteers moderate individual communities. As of December 2025, Reddit ranks among the most visited websites in the world. United States users generate 51.75 percent of traffic. Canada accounts for 7.01 percent, the United Kingdom for 6.97 percent, Australia for 3.97 percent, and Germany for 3 percent. Reddit is known for political activism alongside noticeable left-wing and anti-theist subcultures. Observers praise its system for enabling specialized interest groups. Critics point out that voting can foster online echo chambers and spread misinformation.
