Senior Full Stack Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
Quartermaster is developing a comprehensive maritime intelligence platform designed to serve defense analysts, coast guard operators, and commercial fleet managers. This role involves building and scaling the core application that users rely on to monitor, analyze, and interact with maritime data streams. You will be responsible for developing features across the full technology stack, from backend geospatial data processing to frontend React components, directly impacting how users access, visualize, and interpret sensor and vessel data. The position offers an opportunity to work on mission-critical systems that require high reliability, scalability, and security, contributing to national security and maritime safety efforts.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design, develop, and deploy full-stack features for the maritime intelligence platform, including the React-based web interface and Spring Boot backend services.
- Build, optimize, and maintain RESTful APIs that deliver sensor data, vessel telemetry, AI detection results, and other critical information to end-users.
- Architect and improve the AWS microservices infrastructure, ensuring high availability, scalability, and low latency under high data loads typical of maritime monitoring systems.
- Write efficient geospatial queries in PostGIS to support map rendering, artifact retrieval, and time-series analysis involving large datasets from multiple vessels and sensors.
- Develop internal tools for fleet management, system administration, and deployment support, including configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of deployed SmartMast units.
- Collaborate closely with UI/UX designers and product managers to implement precise, data-rich map views, sensor visualizations, and interactive dashboards that meet operational needs.
- Participate in on-call rotations to ensure system reliability, respond to incidents, and implement improvements to prevent future outages.
- Conduct code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to establishing high technical standards across the engineering team.
- Engage in continuous integration and deployment processes, leveraging CI/CD pipelines to deliver features efficiently and reliably.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and industry best practices related to geospatial data, cloud infrastructure, and full-stack development to continually enhance system capabilities.
- Support operational teams by troubleshooting issues, optimizing performance, and implementing security best practices to safeguard sensitive maritime data.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering, with a proven track record of delivering complex web applications.
- Strong proficiency in React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript, with experience building interactive, data-driven web interfaces.
- Solid backend development skills in Spring Boot, including designing and implementing scalable REST APIs and microservices.
- Practical experience working with PostGIS databases, including schema design, spatial queries, and performance optimization for geospatial data.
- Familiarity with AWS cloud services such as S3, Lambda, ECS/EKS, IoT Core, and CloudWatch, along with infrastructure-as-code tools for deploying and managing cloud resources.
- Experience designing and working within microservices architectures, containerizing applications with Kubernetes, and setting up CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment.
- Ability to handle complex data flows involving real-time streaming data, large media assets, and geospatial coordinates, ensuring data integrity and performance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and documenting technical solutions clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot production issues, optimize system performance, and implement security measures to protect sensitive data.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to technical challenges.
Nice to have
- Experience working with geospatial data visualization libraries such as Mapbox, Leaflet, or Deck.gl, and familiarity with vessel tracking systems like AIS.
- Knowledge of WebSockets or Server-Sent Events (SSE) for real-time UI updates and live data feeds.
- Background in defense, maritime, or government software projects, especially with an understanding of data security and compliance requirements.
- Experience integrating machine learning models and AI detection outputs into user-facing applications to enhance situational awareness.
- Familiarity with maritime industry standards, sensor deployment, and sensor data management.
- Exposure to security protocols relevant to defense and government applications, including handling ITAR-controlled data.
