About the role
In this position, you will be a key contributor within the Product and Engineering team at PitchBook, playing a vital role in driving innovation and delivering high-quality software solutions. Your primary focus will be on leading a team dedicated to authentication and identity management, ensuring the development and deployment of secure, reliable, and scalable services. You will oversee technical strategies related to identity solutions, including migration efforts to platforms like Auth0 and Single Sign-On (SSO), while fostering a collaborative environment that encourages continuous improvement. As an engineering manager, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to align technical initiatives with business goals, support team growth, and maintain high standards of engineering excellence.

What you'll do
- Lead the engineering efforts of the Authentication & Identity team, focusing on key metrics such as capacity planning, delivery speed, quality assurance, system reliability, scalability, and overall technical health of the services.
- Develop strategic plans for the authentication domain, including overseeing the migration to Auth0, implementing SSO solutions, and ensuring these initiatives align with company objectives.
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, and other stakeholders to define technical standards, best practices, and security protocols for identity management.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities for engineers and technical leads within your team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
- Manage hiring processes, onboarding new team members effectively, and planning for succession to ensure team stability and capacity.
- Proactively plan for capacity and capabilities, identifying potential bottlenecks or constraints early and implementing solutions to mitigate risks.
- Oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from initial design and coding to testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance, ensuring adherence to best practices.
- Ensure the stability, performance, and security of authentication services, including monitoring system observability, managing incidents, and implementing improvements based on operational data.
- Promote engineering excellence by establishing and maintaining standards for code review, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), automated testing, and documentation.
- Cultivate a positive team environment rooted in accountability, collaboration, and psychological safety, encouraging open communication and innovation.
- Work closely with Product teams to manage dependencies, coordinate releases, and contribute to broader organizational initiatives related to identity and security.
- Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies in identity management, security, and backend services, integrating relevant innovations into the team's work.
- Support compliance with security policies, including handling sensitive identity data securely and adhering to relevant regulations.
- Participate in strategic planning and contribute to the overall technical vision of the company, ensuring alignment with business needs and technological advancements.
- Facilitate effective communication between engineering, product, and other departments to ensure clarity of goals and expectations.
- Lead efforts to improve observability, incident response, and disaster recovery processes for authentication services.
- Advocate for best practices in software engineering, including automated testing, code quality, and documentation, to ensure maintainability and scalability of systems.
- Support the team in troubleshooting complex issues, providing technical guidance, and resolving escalations efficiently.
- Encourage a culture of innovation, experimentation, and continuous improvement within the team.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in software development, with a focus on building secure, highly available backend services within distributed architectures.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a leadership role managing engineering teams, including responsibilities such as performance reviews, coaching, and team development.
- Over 3 years of hands-on experience designing or coding Java services using Spring Framework or Spring Boot, demonstrating strong backend development skills.
- Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship, with the ability to work on-site in Seattle four days a week.
- Proven experience managing technical projects from planning through deployment, with a focus on security and reliability.
- Strong understanding of software delivery processes, including testing, observability, incident management, and scalability considerations.
- Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and develop team members, foster collaboration, and drive results.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working in fast-paced environments, managing multiple priorities, and adapting to changing requirements.
- Knowledge of best practices in security, identity management, and handling sensitive data.
Nice to have
- Experience leading teams through complex, multi-phase technical projects from conception to production launch.
- Familiarity with identity and access management systems such as Auth0, Okta, or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of SAML SSO, multi-factor authentication, and related security protocols.
- Experience working with PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Docker, GitOps, REST APIs, and cloud-based services.
- Understanding of CIAM (Customer Identity and Access Management) systems and security-sensitive applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams across different locations and time zones.
- Familiarity with incident management, disaster recovery, and system observability tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical challenges.
