About the role
You own the outcomes of every underwriting decision you make for medium to complex risks in the workers' compensation space. You leverage your commercial insurance expertise to protect both our company and our customers by accurately assessing risk and binding coverage that aligns with our guidelines. Every email, call, and message you handle has a direct impact on our reputation and the trust our small business customers place in us. You will work closely with payroll partners to provide technical assistance and ensure policy provisions meet their specific needs. What you'll do
Use your workers' compensation or commercial insurance underwriting expertise to assess medium to complex risks and underwrite new and renewal coverage.
Quickly and effectively decide each request using Pie's underwriting guidelines while evaluating known risk exposures, loss frequency, and severity.
Achieve profitable growth through appropriate risk evaluation while building and maintaining outstanding relationships with payroll partner customers.
Prioritize and resolve payroll partner customer inquiries regarding documentation or support needs in a timely manner.
Provide technical assistance to the payroll partner sales team and customers regarding policy and endorsement provisions and underwriting acceptability.
Maintain strong industry knowledge and stay current on changes in the market and account positions.
Develop and maintain full knowledge of all forms, coverages, ratings, and manuals relevant to the specific line being underwritten.
Participate in the review and evaluation of the risk portfolio, making recommendations on book management issues as needed.
Verify businesses using various resources and databases such as Google, Yelp, LinkedIn, Facebook, and similar sites.
Support the sales team by helping them sell our product while simultaneously discerning risk characteristics within the direct-to-business market.
Balance the execution of processes with a high volume of transactions without compromising accuracy or compliance.
Take on additional tasks, responsibilities, and projects as needed to support team and company objectives.
Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with regulatory requirements and company standards.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance underwriting efficiency and customer experience.
Requirements
High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with some college coursework is preferred.
Minimum 3 years of underwriting experience or equivalent is required.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge of workers' compensation class codes.
Ability to sell our product while simultaneously discerning risk characteristics within the direct-to-business market.
Ability to balance outstanding execution of processes while handling a high volume of transactions.
Experience with Insurity, HubSpot, and Salesforce is preferred.
Experience underwriting insurance for payroll partners is very valuable.
Strong expertise in the California workers' compensation market is preferred.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Nice to have
Experience with commercial insurance underwriting, particularly in workers' compensation.
Familiarity with insurance technology platforms and automation tools.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Practical notes
Some travel could be required in this position, up to 10%.
This role is eligible for equity participation as part of Pie Insurance's total compensation package.
The position reports to the Director of Underwriting and operates within our existing underwriting framework.
