About the role
As a Marketing Intelligence Intern at Paytm Europe, based in Luxembourg, you will be an essential part of the team working to understand and analyze the local merchant market. Your primary focus will be on engaging directly with small businesses across various regions of Luxembourg, including restaurants, cafés, retail shops, convenience stores, fuel stations, and other small enterprises. This role offers a hands-on experience in market research, data collection, and analysis, helping Paytm develop a comprehensive understanding of how merchants accept payments today and identifying opportunities for growth and improvement. You will be involved in both field visits and desk research, playing a key role in shaping the company's go-to-market strategy in the European merchant payments landscape. This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn about fintech, digital payments, and market entry strategies while contributing to the early stages of Paytm's expansion in Europe.

What you'll do
- Visit a diverse range of merchants across Luxembourg, including restaurants, cafés, retail outlets, convenience stores, fuel stations, and other small businesses, to gather firsthand insights.
- Engage with merchants to understand their current payment acceptance methods, including the providers they use, the types of card machines or online payment tools they employ, and their overall experience with these systems.
- Ask clear, structured questions to identify what works well and what challenges merchants face with their current payment solutions.
- Record detailed information about each merchant, including merchant name, precise location, business type, payment methods used, payment providers, and any pain points or issues they mention.
- Conduct desk research on Luxembourg's payments market, focusing on local providers, pricing models, types of card machines, and reviews from merchants to build a broader understanding of the market landscape.
- Identify common challenges faced by merchants, such as high payment processing costs, delays in settlement, onboarding friction, hardware issues, or difficulties with reporting and reconciliation.
- Explore potential opportunities where AI or technological tools could assist merchants, including areas like marketing, invoicing, inventory management, reporting, loyalty programs, and scheduling.
- Write weekly summaries of your findings, highlighting key insights, trends, and potential opportunities for the team to consider.
- Cover key geographic areas including Luxembourg City, Kirchberg, Cloche d'Or, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, Dudelange, Ettelbruck, and border regions near Belgium, France, and Germany, to ensure comprehensive market coverage.
- Collaborate with the team to support the development of market entry strategies based on your research and field insights.
- Assist in identifying merchant pain points and opportunities for introducing new or improved payment solutions, possibly leveraging AI or other technological innovations.
- Provide feedback on merchant needs and preferences to help shape product offerings and marketing strategies.
- Participate in team meetings, sharing insights from your field visits and research, contributing to the overall understanding of Luxembourg's merchant landscape.
- Gain practical experience in how a fintech company approaches market research, competitor analysis, and go-to-market planning in a new geographical region.
Requirements
- Currently studying Business, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Strategy, or related fields; candidates from other backgrounds with curiosity and willingness to learn are also encouraged.
- Comfortable engaging with new people in person, asking questions clearly, and building rapport with merchants.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, especially when recording and managing information collected during field visits and desk research.
- Curious about businesses, technology, and the payments industry, with a desire to learn about fintech and digital payment solutions.
- Reliable, self-motivated, and capable of managing your own schedule, especially when conducting field visits across different locations.
- Skilled at transforming conversations and observations into clear, structured written notes and reports.
- Fluent in English and French; German language skills are strongly preferred. Luxembourgish language skills are a plus.
- Able to work independently and take initiative in a dynamic, early-stage environment.
- Comfortable with travel within Luxembourg and to border regions near Belgium, France, and Germany as needed.
- Open to learning new tools and methods related to market research and data collection.

- Previous experience in field research, surveys, mystery shopping, sales, or customer-facing roles.
- Familiarity with Luxembourg's local business environment and regional nuances.
- Interest in fintech, digital payments, or AI tools that could enhance merchant operations.

- Knowledge of local languages beyond English and French, such as German or Luxembourgish, to facilitate communication with merchants.
