Principal Software Engineer

You will drive teams to expand and optimize technical vision, architecture, and system design for high-scale platforms at PayPay. You will work hands-on to lead multiple projects, resolve complex technical debt, and provide architectural blueprints that turn measurable gains in scalability and efficiency into reality. You will serve as a role model by mentoring junior engineers and directly educating teams on best practices. You will answer consultations across cross-functional groups and champion root-cause problem-solving as a way of life. You will build common platforms that support diverse business verticals and contribute tools or open-source projects where possible. What you'll do

Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve software and core platform components across our ecosystem.

Lead technical aspects for multiple programs through hands-on execution and guidance of other engineers to ensure alignment with business goals.

Provide architectural blueprints and technical leadership to shape long-term system direction and scalability.

Provide input and guidance during all phases of programs to solve challenging technical issues and mitigate risks early.

Build common platforms to support different business vertical application systems and enable rapid, reusable solutions.

Develop tools and contribute to open source wherever possible to amplify impact and share knowledge with the community.

Adopt problem-solving as a way of life by always going to the root cause and driving sustainable, resilient implementations.

Serve as a role model for junior engineers through mentoring, direct education, and fostering a culture of ownership and excellence.

Champion measurable gains in system scalability and efficiency by translating vision into concrete technical outcomes.

Collaborate closely with product, design, and operations teams to translate requirements into robust, future-proof technical strategies.

Identify and prioritize tech debt and determine the best approaches for resolving it while balancing delivery and stability.

Support knowledge transfer and upskilling across teams to raise the overall technical bar and accelerate execution.

Evaluate emerging technologies and patterns to assess their applicability and potential benefits to our platform and products.

Drive continuous improvement across development processes, testing strategies, and deployment pipelines to increase reliability and throughput.

Requirements

You have a solid foundation in designing, implementing, and maintaining large-scale distributed systems that meet strict reliability and availability targets.

You have experience developing distributed platform systems such as messaging platforms, pub/sub systems, databases, distributed computing frameworks, and schedulers.

You demonstrate mastery in at least one programming language and exhibit a very high degree of comfort in writing, reviewing, and debugging complex code.

You communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally, to align diverse stakeholders and articulate technical trade-offs.

You show ownership and accountability, taking initiative to solve ambiguous problems and drive projects to successful completion.

You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where priorities can shift quickly and adaptability is essential.

You value collaboration and actively seek feedback, using it constructively to improve your work and support your peers.

You are authorized to work in the country where this position is based without requiring sponsorship at the time of application.

Nice to have

Experience contributing to or building open-source projects that demonstrate engineering excellence and community impact.

Familiarity with cloud-native technologies, container orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code practices.

Understanding of security and compliance considerations in distributed systems and financial services environments.

This is a full-time position with a hybrid work arrangement.

You must be authorized to work in the country where this position is based without requiring sponsorship at the time of application.
