We are looking for a Cloud Platform Engineer who will own the design, implementation, and day-to-day operations of our critical database infrastructure on the cloud. You will be responsible for ensuring that our data platforms are highly available, performant, and secure at all times. This role requires a strong sense of ownership to drive improvements and resolve complex issues before they impact our users. You will partner closely with product and development teams to align infrastructure strategies with business goals. Key facts
What you'll do
Operate and monitor production database systems around the clock, ensuring reliability and performance.
Configure and manage database instances, including scaling, upgrades, and secure data migration.
Automate routine database operations to improve efficiency and reduce manual errors.
Troubleshoot complex stability and performance issues across distributed database environments.
Conduct in-depth analysis of incidents and implement preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
Research emerging database technologies and tools, evaluating their fit for adoption within PayPay.
Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies for critical data stores.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design scalable data architectures that meet business demands.
Maintain comprehensive documentation for operational procedures, configurations, and decisions.
Promote best practices for database security, compliance, and cost optimization across the organization.
Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and support junior engineers through code and process reviews.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to streamline database operations and enhance system observability.
Participate in on-call rotations to provide timely responses to critical production issues.
Evaluate and benchmark database performance to ensure alignment with service level objectives.
Champion the use of infrastructure as code and automated testing for all database-related changes.
Requirements
Must have a strong background in database technologies and cloud infrastructure operations.
Must be proficient in at least one high-level programming language such as Python or Go for automation tasks.
Must have hands-on experience with relational databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Aurora.
Must understand database replication, sharding, backup strategies, and recovery procedures.
Must be experienced with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or similar platforms.
Must have solid knowledge of cloud platforms, preferably AWS, including IAM, networking, and compute services.
Must be comfortable working with version control systems like Git and infrastructure management tools such as Terraform.
Must have experience with configuration management tools like Ansible or similar automation frameworks.
Must possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex issues under pressure.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with global teams.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
Must have a keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to operational excellence.
Must be comfortable working asynchronously across different time zones in a distributed team.
Must be dedicated to learning and improving both technical and soft skills continuously.
Nice to have
Experience with NoSQL databases such as Redis, Valkey, or DynamoDB.
Familiarity with database migration tools such as Flyway.
Knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
Experience with logging and metrics aggregation tools such as Victoria Metrics.
Understanding of financial services and compliance requirements in the payments domain.
Experience contributing to open source projects or publishing technical content.
Practical notes
This role may require occasional work during off-hours to support critical production incidents.
Candidates must be eligible to work in Japan without sponsorship constraints.
Regular participation in team meetings and on-call duties is expected as part of the role.
