About the role
PayPay is seeking an experienced leader to oversee new business development and service planning within the Merchant Strategy Division. This role is essential for driving the growth and expansion of PayPay's merchant-related services, aiming to establish new revenue streams and enhance existing offerings. The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating strategic initiatives, leading cross-functional teams, and leveraging innovative technologies such as AI to support decision-making and operational efficiency. As a key member of the division, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of PayPay's merchant business, contributing to the company's overall mission to promote cashless payments across Japan.

What you'll do
- Lead the development and execution of comprehensive business strategies for merchant services, ensuring alignment with the company's overall goals.
- Collaborate with senior management and other relevant departments to identify new business opportunities, develop innovative service concepts, and expand existing merchant operations.
- Conduct market research and data analysis to create detailed scenarios and formulate effective strategies that respond to industry trends and merchant needs.
- Design detailed business plans, including setting KPIs and performance metrics for new services, and monitor their progress to ensure targets are met.
- Develop and implement strategic alliances, partnerships, and M&A initiatives with external organizations to accelerate business growth and expand service offerings.
- Utilize generative AI tools to organize large volumes of data, generate hypotheses, automate documentation, and improve overall strategic workflows.
- Lead cross-functional project teams to ensure the successful launch and scaling of new services, managing timelines, budgets, and stakeholder expectations.
- Drive innovation by exploring new technologies and service concepts that can enhance the merchant experience and differentiate PayPay in the marketplace.
- Engage with external partners, industry experts, and internal teams to gather insights, foster collaborations, and stay ahead of industry developments.
- Contribute to the strategic planning process of the company's merchant business, providing insights and recommendations based on data-driven analysis.
- Oversee the implementation of strategies, ensuring operational excellence and continuous improvement in service quality and merchant satisfaction.
- Prepare and present reports and proposals to executive management, supporting decision-making processes with clear data and strategic insights.
Requirements
- Proven experience in business development, corporate planning, or strategic roles within a company, ideally with a focus on payments, fintech, or related industries.
- Practical experience working as a management consultant, particularly in strategy consulting or within the strategic divisions of large consulting firms.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and develop actionable strategies based on insights.
- Experience in utilizing AI technologies, especially generative AI, for data organization, hypothesis generation, and automation of documentation processes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and deliver results within tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills in Japanese; proficiency in English is advantageous for collaborating with international partners or stakeholders.
- Strategic mindset with a history of launching or scaling large-scale new business initiatives.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate with internal and external partners.
- Experience working in a startup, IT, or fast-paced environment is desirable.
- Knowledge of the cashless payment industry or fintech sector is a plus but not required.

Practical notes

Employment type: Full-time employee.
- Work hours: Super flex system (no core hours); typically from 9:00 AM to 5:45 PM, with actual work time of 7 hours 45 minutes plus a 1-hour break.
- Holidays: Weekends, public holidays, year-end and New Year holidays, and company-designated days off.
- Annual paid leave: 14 days in the first year, prorated based on the month of joining.
- Personal leave: 5 days granted annually for personal matters, with 3 or 5 days available in the first year depending on the joining month.

Salary: Annual salary system, which includes some fixed overtime pay; salary is determined based on experience, skills, performance, and contributions, with annual performance reviews.
