Staff Product Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the end-to-end delivery of complex financial features, shaping both the user interface and the underlying services that power them. You will set the technical direction for the Product Engineering team, making high-impact architecture decisions that define the broader product surface. You will partner closely with Product and Design to own roadmap decisions, translating business goals into polished user experiences and robust backend systems. You will mentor engineers, drive code quality, and establish patterns that raise the bar for how the team ships. You will use deep product expertise to reason about edge cases and ensure the user experience remains intuitive even when data is incomplete or unexpected. You will lead cross-functional initiatives, aligning Engineering, Product, and Data Science on priorities and tradeoffs. You will improve how the team works by refining processes and establishing abstractions that make the product surface easier to develop and maintain. You will take ownership of APIs, data models, and backend services, ensuring performance, reliability, and consistency across the stack.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Ship polished user experiences and own the APIs, data models, and backend services behind them, setting a high bar for quality across performance, reliability, and user experience.
- Develop deep product expertise and use it to shape what we build, partnering closely with Product and Design to own roadmap decisions and influence product direction.
- Drive architecture decisions and lead technical reviews, setting technical direction for the team and shaping broader engineering culture and practices.
- Align stakeholders across Engineering and Data Science on priorities and tradeoffs, ensuring clarity on goals and constraints.
- Mentor engineers, improve team processes and code quality, and foster a culture of craft, ownership, and high standards.
- Establish abstractions and architecture patterns that make the broader product surface easier to develop and maintain over time.
- Reason about edge cases when data is missing or when users behave unexpectedly, ensuring the user experience remains robust and intuitive.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives that span multiple teams, coordinating efforts to deliver complex features from concept to production.
- Use data and user feedback to iterate on product decisions, balancing technical constraints with opportunities for improvement.
- Take ownership of the full stack, from UI components to backend services, to unblock the team and keep execution moving smoothly.
- Improve testing and deployment practices to increase confidence in releases and reduce operational risk.
- Collaborate with partners like DoorDash, Amazon, Worldpay, and Mindbody to ensure integrations meet their needs and ours.
- Contribute to long-term technical strategy, identifying where to invest for maximum impact on the business and our small business users.
- Support on-call responsibilities and incident response, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and communication is clear.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building and shipping user-facing products as a full stack engineer, with a track record of owning large, ambiguous problem spaces and driving them from concept to production.
- Able to go deep across the stack to solve complex problems and unblock the team, having built production-quality UIs in React and TypeScript.
- Experienced designing APIs, working with data models, and debugging complex backend systems to ensure reliability and correctness.
- You care deeply about user experience and can reason about what makes one UX better than another, especially when data or constraints are imperfect.
- Opinionated about how software should be built, establishing abstractions, architecture, and patterns that make the broader product surface easier to develop and maintain.
- You lead through influence, having driven cross-functional initiatives that aligned Engineering, Product, and Design around tradeoffs.
- You have raised the bar for engineering quality through technical leadership, mentorship, and by example within your previous teams.
- You are comfortable making decisions that impact the broader product surface while balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.
Nice to have
- Experience working with partners in regulated industries and understanding the constraints that come with financial services.
- Familiarity with small business financial products, such as funding, spend management, and savings tools.
