About the role
In this position, you will own the design and delivery of reliable systems for members and providers. You will solve complex problems in collaboration with partners, product managers, and designers. As a senior member of the engineering team, you will help define technology direction and guide implementations through the full product lifecycle. Your work will ensure that technology serves both members and providers effectively. You will translate ambiguous requirements into robust technical specifications that balance innovation with regulatory realities. You will act as a technical anchor for your squad, driving alignment across distributed teams.
Key facts
The work location for this role is New York, New York, United States. The engagement type is hybrid, requiring three days of in-office work per week. Thursday is a required in-office day for team meetings and events, while the remaining two office days are flexible. The base compensation for this role is $158,400 per year. Additional elements of total compensation include employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.
What you'll do
You will design intake workflows that normalize messy member data before any meaningful processing can occur. You will architect scalable backend services while selecting suitable patterns under strict compliance rules. You will coordinate with partners to define clear interfaces and validate these designs through thorough review sessions. You will refine implementation details to ensure features move steadily from staging environments toward production readiness. You will own observability for shipping paths, watching system metrics while coordinating closely with support partners. You will guide technical migrations using phased rollouts to ensure safe transitions across critical services. You will mentor other engineers on best practices while sustaining momentum across the entire product cycle. You will verify behavior through automated checks before any release reaches external members. You will investigate production incidents with a focus on root cause analysis and long-term remediation. You will collaborate with data teams to ensure metrics used for business decisions remain accurate and consistent. You will contribute to code reviews that emphasize clarity, correctness, and long term maintainability. You will participate in on call rotations to support critical services and respond to urgent issues.
Requirements
You bring five or more years of professional engineering experience with a record of increasingly complex outcomes. You propose experiments on new technologies and data structures, understanding that health industry complexity demands durable solutions. You contribute technical leadership by building fault-tolerant systems that perform well under demanding conditions. You write stable, correct code that remains maintainable with minimal oversight over time. You consistently apply solid computer science concepts within your team context. You work independently to own your domain while progressing steadily without requiring frequent direction. You comply with all applicable laws and regulations in the course of your work. You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex topics into clear explanations. You demonstrate a strong sense of ownership and follow through on commitments in a fast-paced environment.
Nice to have
Experience maintaining libraries written in Python and Golang is valued. Experience owning and managing observability stack tooling, such as Grafana, BigQuery, and Kubernetes. Experience working with data and engineering tooling, including discovery libraries, data replication tools, data transfer systems, and authentication or authorization libraries.
