Senior Platform Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the foundational layers that allow Orb's engineers and AI agents to ship changes rapidly while preserving safety and reliability. This position gives you direct responsibility for the infrastructure and developer platform that underpins every product release. You will define and evolve the abstractions that product engineers use to build billing and pricing features with confidence. The role is high autonomy, meaning you will set your own technical direction and influence how AI-assisted development is implemented across the organization. You will work closely with product engineers and security teams to ensure that safe-by-default practices are embedded in the platform. Because Orb is growing quickly, your work will have immediate and visible impact on the company's ability to scale its revenue design platform. You will play a key role in shaping the engineering culture as we integrate with Adyen and tackle increasingly complex problems.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and maintain the infrastructure and developer platform that spans CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and build systems for a large multi-service codebase at Orb.
Build and iterate on application-platform primitives such as frameworks and abstractions that let product engineers ship features quickly and with consistently high quality.
Create tooling that delivers production-like sandboxes and preview environments so engineers and AI agents can develop and test rapidly and safely.
Strengthen developer-facing observability and on-call health by improving signal quality, reducing noisy pages, and accelerating diagnosis.
Drive forward Orb's investment in AI-assisted and agent-driven development by building the primitives that make these workflows effective and secure.
Collaborate with security teams to ensure that infrastructure and development workflows are safe by default and adhere to best practices.
Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver paved paths that simplify how engineers build, test, and release new features.
Improve the reliability and day-to-day experience of the platforms that hundreds of engineers depend on every day.
Design and implement observability tools that provide better insight into system behavior and reduce mean time to resolution.
Champion automation so that repetitive tasks are minimized and engineers can focus on high-impact problem solving.
Ensure that development environments are fast, predictable, and aligned with production behavior to prevent surprises at release time.
Lead initiatives that require multi-quarter planning and execution with minimal oversight in a fast-moving startup context.
Promote open standards and reusable components so that platform work scales as Orb's product and engineering teams grow.
Evaluate new tools and techniques and introduce them when they meaningfully improve developer velocity and safety.
Act as a technical leader who communicates clearly with both engineering and product stakeholders about platform decisions.
Requirements
Bring 5 or more years of software engineering experience, including ownership of a developer or application platform at meaningful scale.
Possess deep hands-on experience with AWS, infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, container technologies, and modern CI/CD pipelines.
Have a proven track record of building platforms that other engineers rely on, with a strong focus on reliability and day-to-day usability.
Be comfortable taking open-ended, ambiguous problems, defining them independently, and driving multi-quarter initiatives to completion with minimal supervision.
Demonstrate excitement about AI-assisted and agent-driven development and a desire to define its role in a growing engineering organization.
Show commitment to writing safe, maintainable infrastructure code and to collaborating with security to enforce secure defaults.
Communicate effectively in written and verbal form with both technical and non-technical audiences across the organization.
Approach problems with a methodical mindset and a strong attention to detail that prevents regressions and improves long-term maintainability.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to or building internal developer platforms or platform engineering teams.
Background working with billing, payments, or subscription systems in a SaaS environment.
Familiarity with streaming platforms like Kafka and Spark Streaming and data platforms such as Apache Druid and Clickhouse.
Exposure to Typescript, React, and Tailwind CSS for frontend work within a platform context.
Experience with Python backend services and database technologies including PostgreSQL.
Understanding of observability tools, logging, metrics, and tracing systems.
Experience mentoring other engineers and contributing to technical design decisions.
Practical notes
Employees in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Amsterdam are expected to work in the office 3 days per week.
Remote applicants are asked to join the team in person 1 time per quarter.
The role reports to the platform organization within a growing engineering department.
Work is aligned with product release cycles and close collaboration across design, product, and security is expected.
