Staff Platform Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will architect and evolve the platform services and infrastructure that serve as the foundation for OpenSea's onchain marketplace and creator tools. In this role, you own the technical decisions that allow our engineering teams to ship features quickly, safely, and at global scale. You will design systems that are observable, maintainable, and resilient by default, ensuring they protect themselves with minimal manual intervention. You will partner closely with product engineers to improve developer experience, system performance, and operational excellence across all product domains. You will actively evolve AI-enabled workflows and the technical foundations that make our entire team more effective builders. Your work will directly support millions of users and the onchain assets and communities that depend on our infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and evolve the platform services, infrastructure, and internal tooling that power OpenSea's products.
- Own complex technical systems from definition through implementation, balancing scalability, reliability, maintainability, and developer experience.
- Bring best-in-class observability, monitoring and alerting to all of the systems at OpenSea.
- Maintain and improve AI skills & tools to make our systems more accessible, introspectable and easy to contribute to.
- Accelerate and expand CI coverage to improve correctness and AI verifiability.
- Partner closely with product teams to accelerate build & deployment of critical products (where your agents can't yet!).
- Build and ship high-quality, reliable software leveraging AI, modern development tools, and strong engineering judgment.
- Define and standardize platform patterns that enable product engineers to move quickly without sacrificing long-term stability.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure infrastructure investments align with product roadmaps and company priorities.
- Champion operational best practices that reduce toil and enable systems to protect themselves.
- Drive initiatives that improve security, compliance, and performance across the platform footprint.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and determine how they can be leveraged to enhance engineering productivity and system capabilities.
- Lead incident responses and postmortems to drive continuous improvement of platform reliability.
- Mentor engineers by elevating code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing across the platform team.
Requirements
- 7+ years of software engineering experience building large-scale backend or platform systems.
- Strong fluency in JVM languages such as Kotlin or Java.
- Experience designing and operating distributed systems, backend services, and modern cloud infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of platform engineering principles, developer tooling, CI/CD, observability, and operational best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to own complex, ambiguous technical problems and deliver thoughtful, scalable solutions.
- Excitement for making independent technical decisions balancing reliability, scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
- Experience leveraging AI tools and workflows to improve engineering quality, efficiency, and team effectiveness.
- Passion for Web3, digital ownership, AI, or other emerging technologies.
