Full Stack Software Engineer, Codex
Job description
About the Team
The Coding team is reimagining how software is built in the AI era. We build tools and workflows that help software engineers work faster, tackle more ambitious projects, and spend less time on repetitive tasks. AI has already transformed how code is written, but software engineering extends far beyond coding. Our mission is to apply AI across the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC) - from design and implementation to code review, testing, debugging, issue remediation, maintenance, documentation, and user support. The team is also responsible for developer-facing Codex experiences including the Codex IDE Extension and the terminal interface, which are used daily by developers ranging from individual open-source contributors to some of the world's largest engineering organizations. The team also works closely with the open-source software community, building tools that help maintainers and contributors manage increasingly complex projects. We believe AI can make open-source development more sustainable by reducing the operational burden of reviewing contributions, triaging issues, maintaining quality, and supporting growing communities. By building the future of software development, we're helping advance OpenAI's mission of ensuring that the benefits of AI reach people around the world.
About the Role
We're hiring a Full Stack Software Engineer to help invent the next generation of AI-powered software development workflows. "Full stack" in this role means much more than traditional frontend and backend development. You will own complete product experiences, spanning user interfaces, workflow orchestration, agent and prompt design, backend systems, and cloud infrastructure. This is a highly product-oriented role. You will work directly on the workflows developers use every day, identifying bottlenecks and rethinking how software gets built in a world where AI agents are active participants in the development process. The features you ship will influence how developers around the world write, review, test, and maintain software. In this role, you will:
- Build end-to-end product experiences that span frontend applications, backend services, agent workflows, cloud infrastructure, and developer tooling.
- Design AI-powered workflows that generalize across a wide variety of software engineering teams, languages, codebases, and development practices.
- Discover and implement novel ways to apply AI to eliminate friction throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Partner closely with product, design, and research to understand developer needs and rapidly translate insights into shipped product improvements.
- Work directly with users - including developers at OpenAI, open-source contributors, startups, and large enterprises - to understand pain points and validate solutions.
- Improve the reliability, observability, scalability, and performance of the systems and workflows you build.
- Translate ambiguous product requirements into well-defined technical solutions while balancing tradeoffs between speed, quality, and maintainability.
- Contribute to the technical roadmap by proposing new capabilities based on user feedback, emerging trends, and collaboration with cross-functional partners.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and implement full-stack features that integrate frontend interfaces with backend services, agent orchestration layers, and cloud infrastructure.
- Implement agent workflows that leverage large language models to automate steps in the software development process while maintaining robustness and reliability.
- Optimize developer workflows by identifying repetitive tasks and designing AI-assisted automations that reduce cognitive load and cycle time.
- Collaborate with researchers to prototype new AI capabilities and evaluate their impact on real-world developer workflows.
- Conduct design reviews and code reviews to ensure solutions meet high standards for performance, scalability, and maintainability.
- Instrument systems for observability and debugging to support rapid iteration and post-launch improvements.
- Engage with the open-source community to gather feedback, prioritize issues, and guide tool improvements that reduce maintenance burden for maintainers.
- Translate user needs into product specifications and work with designers to translate concepts into high-quality user experiences.
- Write clean, testable, and maintainable code that adheres to best practices across frontend, backend, and infrastructure components.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support production systems and respond to critical issues affecting users.
Requirements
- Have a strong background in software engineering with experience building and shipping production-grade applications.
- Demonstrate proficiency in modern frontend technologies and comfort working with complex backend systems and APIs.
- Bring experience with TypeScript, Rust, or a similar systems or application programming language to the role.
- Show deep familiarity with software development tools, workflows, and engineering best practices across the full stack.
- Exhibit comfort working with AI-assisted development tools and an understanding of their current strengths and limitations.
- Have a proven track record of owning products end-to-end, from initial concept through launch, iteration, and ongoing improvement.
- Demonstrate strong product judgment and the ability to make decisions based on user feedback and data.
- Show creativity in reframing problems and inventing new workflows instead of only optimizing existing approaches.
Nice to have
- Experience contributing to or building tools for open-source projects at scale.
- Familiarity with AI model internals, prompt engineering techniques, and agent orchestration patterns.
- Background in developer tools, platform engineering, or infrastructure reliability roles.
Practical notes
This role is based in San Francisco and requires full-time engagement. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship at this time.
