This individual contributor role focuses on developing practical, scalable compensation programs from evolving business needs. You will be a key player in ensuring our compensation strategies attract and retain top talent. You will translate ambiguous business challenges into structured compensation solutions that align with our strategic goals. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining internal equity. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to ensure compensation strategies support business growth. The role demands comfort with iterative change and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. You will be responsible for owning the end-to-end lifecycle of compensation programs specific to the GTM organization.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and iterate compensation programs tailored specifically for OpenAI's expanding GTM division.
- Interpret complex market data and translate findings into actionable recommendations for GTM leaders.
- Partner with HR Business Partners to resolve compensation issues and ensure consistent application of policies.
- Lead compensation analysis and approval processes for new offers, balancing market competitiveness with internal equity.
- Conduct in-depth benchmarking exercises to evaluate the competitiveness of GTM roles in the marketplace.
- Architect flexible sales compensation plans that motivate desired behaviors and support long-term objectives.
- Develop job architecture elements that provide a clear framework for role leveling and pay grades.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing compensation frameworks and identify areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with Finance to model the financial impact of proposed compensation changes.
- Communicate compensation rationale clearly to senior stakeholders to build understanding and trust.
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert for compensation queries across Recruiting, HR, and Finance teams.
- Drive the creation of new processes that standardize compensation workflows for scalability.
- Provide strategic guidance to ensure compensation decisions support OpenAI's talent acquisition goals.
- Share best practices and insights with the broader Compensation team to elevate company-wide programs.
Requirements
- 6+ years of compensation experience with a significant focus on GTM or commercial organizations.
- Demonstrated expertise in sales compensation design and administration.
- Proven ability to conduct market benchmarking and translate data into compensation strategies.
- Experience creating or substantially improving compensation programs within a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- A builder's mindset that thrives in ambiguity and is capable of creating structure from complexity.
- Strong analytical judgment to synthesize complex datasets into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Excellent communication skills to foster trust with senior stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively collaborating within a team setting.
- Deep understanding of compensation regulations and compliance requirements relevant to employment law.
- Proficiency in analyzing compensation data using spreadsheets and related analytical tools.
- Capacity to manage confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

- Willingness to engage in continuous learning to keep up with compensation trends and best practices.

Practical notes
- This role is based in our San Francisco or New York office; remote applications are not considered.
- We operate on a hybrid model, requiring 3 days in the office, with optional work from home on Thursdays and Fridays.
