Asset Compliance Program Lead, Hardware

About the role

You will own the design and execution of the asset compliance operating model for OpenAI's hardware footprint. This role is responsible for establishing the controls, evidence practices, and systems roadmap that provide reliable lifecycle visibility over financial assets and capital equipment. You will define how assets are purchased, built, received, moved, held, verified, and retired while ensuring alignment with financial governance. You will partner with hardware business units, Accounting, Financial Risk Management, Procurement, contract manufacturers, and third-party custodians to implement practical operating mechanisms. This position operates at the intersection of procurement, finance, and operations to manage risk without introducing unnecessary friction. You will use a detailed understanding of operational reality to strengthen processes, accountability, and systems.

What you'll do

Define and scale the end-to-end asset-compliance operating model covering acquisition, capitalization, custody, location tracking, transfers, lifecycle events, inventory and verification, impairment or retirement, and audit-evidence retention.

Establish the authoritative asset record and systems roadmap that connects requests, contracts, purchase orders, invoices, receiving, inventory data, physical custody, transfers, and financial records.

Own the definition of asset ownership and control points across OpenAI teams, suppliers, contract manufacturers, logistics providers, and other third-party custodians.

Build lifecycle reconciliations and a scalable verification model across multiple internal and third-party sites using risk-based inventories, sample testing, attestations, and corrective-action tracking.

Establish an initial baseline of asset exposure and control gaps then prioritize remediation based on financial operational custody and reporting risk.

Identify recurring issues and drive process system workflow automation and AI-enabled improvements to prevent repeat problems and enhance the stakeholder experience.

Shape policy standards and governance improvements by bringing operational evidence implementation insight and risk findings to appropriate decision-makers.

Define executive reporting on asset completeness control performance audit readiness remediation progress and emerging risks.

Partner closely with procurement and contract manufacturing teams to ensure asset-related requirements are embedded in contracts and supplier agreements.

Lead cross-functional initiatives to resolve discrepancies between physical inventory records financial records and system of truth.

Implement controls and evidence practices for assets located in manufacturing facilities supplier sites and third-party custody locations.

Design controls for manufacturing equipment tooling leased assets and other third-party-held equipment to ensure visibility and accountability.

Use data analytics and reconciliation workflows to detect anomalies discrepancies and potential control failures in asset movements and records.

Champion continuous improvement by documenting learnings updating playbooks and enabling teams through training and clear standards.

Requirements

Have 8+ years of experience in hardware operations supply chain manufacturing asset management procurement operations audit risk and controls or a similarly control-intensive environment.

Possess experience owning or improving end-to-end asset custody inventory or third-party control processes.

Have experience operating in complex hardware environments such as contract manufacturing supplier- or third-party-held assets manufacturing equipment or tooling global custody logistics or physical inventory and verification.

Demonstrate systems fluency including ERP platforms such as SAP or Oracle and the data flows among procurement purchase orders invoices receiving inventory asset records and the general ledger.

Have experience establishing audit readiness through risk-based testing reconciliations evidence reviews and remediation tracking.

Show ability to define and improve asset management workflows reporting and control systems.

Exhibit strong collaboration skills to work effectively with hardware business units Accounting Financial Risk Management Procurement and external partners.

Bring a strong sense of ownership for establishing clear policies standards and governance for asset lifecycle management.

Nice to have

Experience implementing AI-enabled controls or data reconciliation solutions for asset management.

Background in environments with high-value manufacturing equipment or capital-intensive hardware operations.

Practical notes

This is a full-time role based in San Francisco.

The role involves collaboration with internal teams and external partners including contract manufacturers and custodians.

Travel may be required to third-party sites and vendor locations as needed for audits verifications and process improvement.
