Product Designer, Engineering Acceleration
Job description
About the role
You will own the end-to-end design for data-intensive products that help engineers, researchers, and product teams understand complex systems and act with confidence. You will shape the complete learning loop from instrumentation through launch, observation, investigation, evaluation, and iteration. You will define interaction models that guide users from a vague question or unexpected signal to a trustworthy answer and a clear next step. You will partner closely with engineers, researchers, data scientists, and product managers to translate deeply technical infrastructure into coherent, elegant product experiences. You will establish durable patterns that create consistency across OpenAI's enterprise and internal tools. You will make complex concepts such as data freshness, coverage, reliability, uncertainty, experiment assignment, metric validity, rollout state, and regressions understandable and actionable. You will use prototyping, research, and rigorous design exploration to establish interaction patterns for emerging technical and AI-native workflows. You will raise the bar for information architecture, visual hierarchy, interaction quality, and craft across complex, multi-surface products.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define end-to-end workflows for data-intensive products used by engineers, researchers, and product teams.
Shape the complete learning loop: instrument, launch, observe, investigate, evaluate, decide, and iterate.
Create clear, high-craft workflows for querying, filtering, comparison, drill-down, visualization, alerting, and sharing.
Make complex concepts such as data freshness, coverage, reliability, uncertainty, experiment assignment, metric validity, rollout state, and regressions understandable and actionable.
Partner with engineering, data science, research, and product management to translate technical infrastructure into coherent product experiences.
Use prototyping, research, and design exploration to establish interaction patterns for emerging technical and AI-native workflows.
Define shared systems and patterns that create consistency across OpenAI's enterprise and internal tools.
Establish a high standard for information architecture, visual hierarchy, interaction quality, and craft across complex, multi-surface products.
Design interfaces that support both rapid investigation and careful decision-making in high-stakes environments.
Translate ambiguous product goals into clear design directions that balance user needs with technical constraints.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure designs are feasible, reliable, and aligned with user workflows.
Advocate for clarity, trust, and usability through clear provenance, reliable signals, and well-structured feedback.
Contribute to design systems and reusable patterns that enable other designers and engineers to build efficiently.
Measure the impact of design changes through qualitative and quantitative signals and iterate based on evidence.
Requirements
You have substantial experience owning data products, observability platforms, experimentation systems, analytics products, developer tools, AI/ML tooling, or similarly technical workflows.
You are a strong product and systems thinker who can set direction in an ambiguous space and make durable interaction and platform decisions.
You can make dense information feel calm, legible, and useful without oversimplifying important complexity.
You are technically fluent, enjoy learning how underlying systems work, and can build credibility with engineers and other highly technical users.
You have strong instincts for trust and understand how provenance, reliability, uncertainty, permissions, and edge cases affect whether people act on a system's output.
You have redesigned workflows spanning multiple tools, products, or surfaces and can create coherence across a broader ecosystem.
You have strong UX/UI and interaction design skills, with a high bar for contemporary visual craft and information design.
You can demonstrate how your work changed product decisions, accelerated learning, or improved the velocity of the teams you supported.
You enjoy staying close to detailed workflows and hands-on design while helping shape a broader product vision.
You are excited to define how engineers and AI agents will build, evaluate, and improve software together.
You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift based on technical discovery and user needs.
You communicate clearly and persuasively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You are proactive about identifying risks, dependencies, and opportunities early in the design process.
You approach design with a mindset toward scalability, maintainability, and long-term platform thinking.
Nice to have
Experience with AI-native workflows, toolchains, and emerging interaction patterns in developer tools or data platforms.
Background in experimentation, observability, or analytics platforms and understanding of metrics, sampling, and evaluation methodologies.
Experience collaborating with deeply technical teams and influencing through clarity of structure and language.
