What you'll do

• Architect and manage resilient, scalable cloud infrastructure on AWS, emphasizing high availability and cross-regional redundancy for critical services.
• Enhance developer experience by improving secrets management, automation workflows, cloud environment provisioning, and fine-grained access control mechanisms.
• Modernize and optimize our self-hosted GitLab instance, refining version control operations and CI/CD pipeline efficiency and reliability.
• Partner with product engineers, data engineers, and technical program managers to deeply understand their requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
• Lead the design and implementation initiatives for the digital health program's architecture, ensuring alignment with long-term platform goals.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to fellow engineers, elevating the overall capability and code quality of the platform team.
• Engage in rotating on-call duties for production services, demonstrating calm under pressure and effective troubleshooting during critical incidents.
• Evaluate, prototype, and integrate infrastructure as code tools to standardize environment management and reduce operational overhead.
• Analyze application performance using Datadog, creating custom metrics and log analysis strategies to proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks.
• Maintain and secure persistent virtual Linux hosts and storage systems, ensuring data integrity, performance, and recoverability.
• Build, deploy, and orchestrate containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes to streamline deployment processes and improve scalability.
• Collaborate on the development and maintenance of internal tools that empower engineers to build and deploy software with greater independence.
• Document technical designs and operational procedures clearly, ensuring knowledge sharing and continuity across the platform.
• Contribute to the evolution of best practices for cloud security, compliance, and cost optimization across engineering projects.

Requirements

• Possess a minimum of 5 years of professional experience designing, building, and operating AWS cloud architectures in a production environment.
• Demonstrate proven experience managing and operating Kubernetes clusters, including deployment, scaling, and maintenance tasks.
• Show proficiency with infrastructure as code tools, specifically Terraform and Ansible, for automating infrastructure provisioning and configuration.
• Exhibit experience using Datadog for application performance monitoring, including setting up custom metrics and conducting log analysis.
• Have a demonstrated history of managing, configuring, and troubleshooting persistent virtual Linux hosts and storage solutions.
• Hold experience building, deploying, and orchestrating Docker containers within clustered environments like Kubernetes.
• Maintain strong written and verbal communication abilities, with a track record of creating clear and concise technical documentation.
• Understand the fundamentals of networking, security, and distributed systems as they apply to cloud-native applications.
• Capable of working independently and collaboratively in a fully remote setting without direct supervision.
• Comfortable making decisions and taking ownership of complex technical problems with ambiguous requirements.
• Willing to mentor junior engineers and participate in code reviews to uphold engineering standards.
• Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.

Nice to have

• Experience managing and administering self-hosted GitLab instances at scale.
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL database administration, including performance tuning and query optimization.
• Prior experience developing software using the Golang programming language.
• Previous work experience within the healthcare industry, understanding of compliance and data sensitivity.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position based in the United States as a remote role. Salary ranges are determined by zone, with Zone 1 ranging from $179,400 to $224,300, Zone 2 ranging from $171,600 to $214,500, and Zone 3 ranging from $156,000 to $195,000. Compensation will be determined by zone, candidate experience, and other factors.
