About the role
This position sits at the intersection of product strategy and engineering execution where you will own the end-to-end lifecycle of critical features within our flagship Kraken platform. You will partner with cross-functional squads to translate ambiguous business problems into elegant technical solutions that directly impact customer experience and operational efficiency. Your work will drive the reliability and performance of the systems that power Octopus Energy's rapid growth across multiple markets. You will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the scalable backend services that millions of customers interact with every day. This role requires a deep commitment to clean code, robust testing, and continuous improvement of the development pipeline. You will mentor junior engineers and collaborate with architects to ensure our technical roadmap remains secure and future-proof. What you'll do
Refactor legacy billing components into modular, testable services that reduce technical debt and accelerate feature delivery.
Design and implement event-driven architectures using Kafka to enable real-time data processing across the energy trading systems.
Optimize database schemas and queries to improve query response times and reduce infrastructure costs for high-volume transactional workloads.
Lead the migration of critical services to cloud-native infrastructure, ensuring zero-downtime deployments and robust disaster recovery strategies.
Collaborate with data scientists to integrate machine learning models into production pipelines for dynamic pricing and fraud detection.
Build internal developer tools and APIs that simplify complex workflows for product teams and reduce time-to-market for new features.
Investigate and resolve high-severity incidents in production environments, conducting blameless postmortems to prevent recurrence.
Automate monitoring and alerting frameworks to provide actionable insights into system health and performance bottlenecks.
Champion security best practices by conducting threat modeling and ensuring compliance with industry standards for financial data.
Mentor engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and technical workshops to elevate the overall quality of the engineering organization.
Define and maintain technical documentation that ensures continuity and clarity for long-lived software products.
Partner with product managers to scope technical requirements and align engineering efforts with business objectives.
Evaluate emerging technologies and prototype solutions to determine their viability for integration into our core stack.
Own the operational runbooks and support playbooks for the services you develop to ensure seamless handovers to operations teams.
Requirements
You must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
You possess a strong understanding of distributed systems and the challenges of scaling stateful applications in production environments.
You are proficient in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Python, or Go, with demonstrated experience writing clean, maintainable code.
You have hands-on experience with containerization technologies, particularly Docker, and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.
You understand database design principles and have worked with both relational and NoSQL data stores in high-throughput scenarios.
You have a solid grasp of networking fundamentals, including HTTP protocols, load balancing, and service-to-service communication.
You are experienced with cloud platforms, ideally AWS, Azure, or GCP, and are comfortable managing infrastructure as code.
You demonstrate a proactive approach to debugging and troubleshooting complex issues in live systems.
You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating business needs into technical tasks.
Nice to have
Experience with energy, utility, or financial services domains is highly valued.
Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as GDPR or industry-specific compliance standards.
Contributions to open-source projects or a portfolio of public-facing applications.
Experience with message queues and streaming platforms beyond Kafka, such as RabbitMQ or AWS SQS.
Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or GitHub Actions.
