Always on the lookout for Brilliant Humans
Job description
About the role
Join Octopus Energy Trading and become part of a team that operates far outside the boundaries of traditional corporate structures. We are actively seeking brilliant humans to strengthen our power trading operations in a setting where flat structures and direct decision-making are the standard. Here, technology is not purchased off the shelf; it is built by our own hands to serve our specific strategic goals. Speed is our primary competitive advantage, and rigid process is deliberately avoided to maintain this edge. We exist with the clear mission to accelerate the global move toward Net Zero by fundamentally reshaping how energy markets operate. This ambitious goal requires talented individuals who are ready to actively challenge the status quo and refuse complacency. If you are prepared to move beyond conventional energy trading environments, this role represents a direct opportunity to contribute to that transformation.
What you'll do
You will own the complete power trading workflow, bearing full responsibility for the journey from initial intake through to final execution. This requires you to challenge every assumption you encounter and rebuild each step for greater efficiency and effectiveness. Collaboration with builders and partners is essential as you help shape key decisions and outcomes that define our market position.
Your specific duties will include designing intake steps for clean power market signals and converting them into structured datasets suitable for analysis. You will craft trading rule logic and simulation models in partnership with engineers, ensuring these scenarios are tested rigorously in real market conditions. You will review trade performance and risk metrics with a critical eye, ensuring that insights are not just generated but are actionable. Shipping analytical products is a core function; these products expose volatility, manage exposure, and guide flexible energy decisions in dynamic environments.
You will partner with data teams to build pipelines that merge external data with our domain expertise, creating a cohesive information foundation. Guiding battery and EV strategies is another critical task, requiring you to convert complex grid signals into clear, executable trading instructions. Leading experiments to test new hypotheses is expected, ensuring our analytical tools evolve alongside shifting market designs and regulations. You will also champion clarity in communication, rewriting long agendas and aligning stakeholders on a concise shared understanding to drive execution.
Requirements
A deep background in power trading is essential and non-negotiable for this role. You must discuss numbers, risk, and strategy with equal competence, demonstrating fluency across all three domains. The ability to think in systems is critical; you must identify underlying patterns and rebuild them to achieve superior real-world results. Efficiency is a strict requirement, compelling you to choose high-effort tasks that generate genuine value rather than engaging in low-impact activities.
There are no stated nice-to-have qualifications or preferred skills listed; the requirements are based solely on the hard bars and expertise you bring to the table. Your expertise must explicitly cover power trading, and you must possess a thorough understanding of the GB market, European markets, and Asian markets to succeed in this position. Familiarity with in-house analytical tools is necessary for effective performance. Knowledge of classical analytical techniques and machine learning approaches is expected as you will work with both. You will routinely work with data on demand, particularly related to renewables and transmission system fundamentals, focusing heavily on the GB intraday power market. Experience with batteries, EVs, and heat pumps is relevant and will be integral to your success in shaping flexible asset strategies.
Location and Compensation
The role is based worldwide, offering complete flexibility in your location as long as you can perform the responsibilities associated with the position. The position is full-time. Compensation ranges from 60,000 to 80,000 GBP for candidates with 3 to 5 years of power trading experience.
