Senior/Staff Systems Engineer, Autonomy Verification
Job description
About the role
Join our engineering organization to define and execute verification strategies for autonomous driving software. You will ensure our systems meet rigorous safety and performance standards as we transition toward licensing our technology for robotaxis and passenger vehicles. In this capacity, you will own the end-to-end verification lifecycle for critical autonomy features, translating abstract safety goals into concrete testable cases. You will act as the primary liaison between verification, software, and hardware teams to ensure alignment on requirements and outcomes. Your work will directly influence the reliability and robustness of Nuro's driving stack in both simulation and the real world. You will establish traceability from system-level objectives to low-level implementation details through rigorous analysis and documentation. This role requires a proactive mindset to identify verification gaps before they become project risks. You will play a key role in building the foundational infrastructure that proves our autonomy software behaves as intended.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and implement comprehensive verification frameworks to validate autonomous driving software behavior across diverse operational conditions.
- Develop simulation and on-road testing protocols to confirm system reliability, edge case handling, and consistent performance in dynamic environments.
- Collaborate with software and hardware teams to identify performance gaps, root causes, and opportunities for iterative improvements in safety requirements.
- Establish metrics and reporting standards to track the maturity of our autonomous driving stack and provide clear evidence of compliance.
- Define verification test plans that map directly to safety requirements, ensuring coverage of critical scenarios and regulatory expectations.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation of verification activities, results, and decisions to support audits, reviews, and stakeholder communication.
- Partner with product and engineering stakeholders to integrate verification insights into the development roadmap and prioritize high-impact improvements.
- Leverage data-driven analysis to evaluate system behavior, identify trends, and drive evidence-based decisions for release readiness.
- Support the creation of internal tools and processes that streamline verification workflows and improve team efficiency over time.
- Champion best practices in verification methodology, promoting consistency, transparency, and rigor across the autonomy organization.
- Lead cross-functional discussions to align on verification objectives, clarify acceptance criteria, and resolve conflicting requirements.
- Contribute to the evolution of Nuro's verification standards by incorporating lessons learned from testing, deployment, and feedback loops.
- Anticipate future verification challenges as the autonomy stack scales, proposing solutions that keep pace with product growth and complexity.
- Act as an expert resource for verification-related inquiries, helping teams understand requirements, constraints, and outcomes.
Requirements
- Professional experience in systems engineering, verification, or validation within the autonomous vehicle or robotics industry demonstrating a track record of delivering safety-critical verification outcomes.
- Proficiency in defining safety requirements and performance benchmarks for complex robotic systems, with an ability to break them down into measurable test conditions.
- Ability to bridge the gap between high-level safety goals and low-level software implementation ensuring that verification activities remain aligned with system intent.
- Strong analytical background in evaluating system behavior through data-driven testing, using quantitative evidence to support conclusions and decisions.
- Demonstrated skill in working with autonomous driving software stacks, understanding their architecture, interfaces, and operational constraints.
- Experience with simulation-based testing environments and the ability to design scenarios that stress the system under realistic conditions.
- Familiarity with systems engineering methodologies and how they apply to the verification of perception, planning, and control components.
- Knowledge of safety validation protocols and an understanding of how to structure verification work to support compliance and traceability.
