Staff Software Engineer, Routing
Job description
About the Role
This role centers on owning the complete routing stack, from intake through deployment, to ensure the Nuro Driver™ operates safely and efficiently on every road. You will architect the systems that process map updates and sensor data, design the foundational components for rapid graph queries and accurate realtime ETAs, and implement rigorous review gates that protect algorithmic integrity before changes reach users. Success requires close partnership with mapping teams to manage global road graph changes and deprecation policies, as well as championing onboard routing modules that balance computational constraints against accuracy in dynamic vehicle environments. You will also define critical storage strategies, choosing between relational and non-relational systems for telemetry and map data, and own the deployment pipelines that maintain high reliability across GCP and AWS infrastructures. This position demands a hands-on engineer who is comfortable diving into complex distributed systems while maintaining a clear line of sight to operational stability and product correctness. You will be responsible for translating ambiguous routing problems into robust technical solutions that scale across diverse geographies and use cases. The work you do will directly influence how safely and predictably our vehicles navigate the communities they serve every day.
Key Facts
The position is located in Mountain View, California, which serves as the company headquarters. The engagement is for a full-time employee. The base compensation for this role is $171,996.00 per year.
What You'll Do
You will architect intake pipelines that normalize messy map updates and diverse sensor streams specifically for routing purposes. You will design essential building blocks that enable efficient graph queries and realtime ETA calculations under varying traffic conditions. You will implement robust review gates that validate algorithmic correctness before any routing changes impact users. You will ship monitoring tools that surface route anomalies in real time while coordinating closely with operations partners to resolve issues. You will partner with mapping teams globally to align on road graph changes and establish clear deprecation policies. You will champion onboard modules that make critical tradeoffs between compute limits and routing accuracy for vehicles in motion. You will define storage tradeoffs, deciding between relational and non-relational databases for telemetry and mapping needs. You will own deployment pipelines that ensure routing services remain reliable across both GCP and AWS environments. You will collaborate with data science teams to validate routing metrics and ensure model outputs are aligned with real-world performance. You will drive technical design discussions that balance long-term scalability with immediate product needs.
Requirements
You bring a minimum of 8 years of experience building and scaling realtime server-side systems that handle complex routing workloads. You understand large-scale algorithm challenges and how to balance correctness against latency in routing applications. You choose storage technologies wisely, with experience across systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigTable, Cassandra, Redis, BigQuery, or Snowflake. You work comfortably with messaging and RPC frameworks including gRPC, Thrift, Kafka, Cloud PubSub, and Celery. You operate with confidence managing routing infrastructure at scale across GCP and AWS. You are fluent with Docker and Kubernetes, adapting routing services to meet changing constraints. You have a strong grasp of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and system design principles. You are able to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You have a proven track record of delivering reliable services in production environments with high uptime standards. You are comfortable reading and interpreting complex system documentation and specifications.
Nice to Have
Prior experience with routing algorithms is beneficial. Proficiency in C++ programming is a strong asset. Experience with training and inferencing machine learning models adds additional value. Familiarity with map data structures and graph data representations is also advantageous.
Practical Notes
Core tools and technologies relevant to this role include Nuro Driver, PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigTable, Cassandra, Redis, BigQuery, Snowflake, gRPC, Thrift, Kafka, Cloud PubSub, Celery, Docker, Kubernetes, GCP, and AWS. These tools form the backbone of how you will implement, deploy, and operate routing services at scale. You will leverage these technologies to build resilient and performant systems that meet the stringent requirements of autonomous vehicle operations. You will frequently switch context between low-level system design and high-level product discussions, ensuring that technical decisions are aligned with business objectives. The role requires a balance of deep technical expertise and the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.
