Software Engineer, Onboard Platform
Job description
About the role
Nuro is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Onboard Platform team in building the foundational software that powers our Level 4 autonomy stack directly on our hardware. In this role, you will own the design, implementation, and reliability of the onboard systems that enable our self-driving vehicles to operate safely and efficiently in the real world. You will collaborate closely with hardware engineers, performance teams, and safety-critical groups to ensure software integrates seamlessly with sensors, compute platforms, and control systems. The position requires a strong focus on low-latency, high-throughput, and fault-tolerant software architectures that meet the rigorous demands of autonomous driving. You will investigate and resolve complex onboard errors, drive performance improvements, and contribute to the robustness of the entire autonomy pipeline. This role is critical to delivering a dependable and scalable autonomy platform that supports diverse vehicle types and deployment scenarios. Your work will directly impact the safety, reliability, and capabilities of vehicles operating on public roads.
What you'll do
- Design, develop, and maintain the onboard software stack that supports perception, planning, and control functions across Nuro's self-driving platforms.
- Implement device drivers, runtime APIs, and inter-device communication protocols to enable reliable data flow between sensors, compute, and actuators.
- Collaborate with hardware teams to define, evaluate, and integrate next-generation hardware platforms and ensure software compatibility.
- Optimize software performance, reduce latency, and improve resource utilization to meet real-time and safety requirements.
- Build and maintain profiling, tracing, and analysis tools to monitor system health, diagnose onboard errors, and drive continuous improvement.
- Partner with the Performance team to analyze workload characteristics, identify bottlenecks, and implement efficiency enhancements.
- Support the development and maintenance of a hardware-agnostic platform that enables rapid integration of new sensors and compute modules.
- Contribute to the reliability, quality, and safety of the onboard software through rigorous testing, validation, and fault-handling mechanisms.
- Work within a distributed, multi-threaded, and highly concurrent environment to ensure stable operation of critical autonomy functions.
- Act as a systems thinker, bridging software, hardware, and safety considerations to deliver solutions that scale across vehicles and use cases.
Requirements
- Must have a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
- Must have at least 2 years of relevant industry experience beyond the degree.
- Must possess strong C++ skills and a deep understanding of software engineering fundamentals.
- Must have hands-on experience with large-scale distributed systems and concurrent programming in multi-processor and multi-threaded environments.
- Must be proficient in operating systems concepts, computer architecture, and performance tuning of software systems.
- Must have experience with profiling, tracing, and diagnostic tools such as perf, eBPF, Perfetto, pprof, or NVIDIA Nsight Systems/Compute.
- Must be comfortable working with robotics software frameworks and hardware components, including sensors and embedded platforms.
- Must be able to work with different compute modalities and architectures, such as x86, ARM, GPU, and FPGA.
- Must demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to debug complex, real-world systems under tight safety and reliability constraints.
